Technology - What changes have you seen??? (Non-pepper related)

First of all... I have been around for awhile... (Read this as - I'm an old fart...) LOL
While I was drinking my coffee and perusing the forum this morning, I notice several posts that made references to today's technology... It was about this time that I suddenly found myself doing some reflective thinking... It became obvious to me that there are a lot of "younger" members than me and just how much technology had changed over my lifetime... It also made me curious as to what changes others had seen in their lifetime... Hence the purpose of this post... Nothing really important, just feeling a little old and nostalgic...

What changes have you seen in your lifetime... Such as:

1. What calculator did you own as a senior in high school???

2. What was the first computer that you used???

3. What was the first computer that you owned???

4. Do you remember B/W television???

5. Do you remember life without a cellphone???

6. Do you remember when home phones were attached to the wall???

7. Was you first watch digital or analog???

8. What did you first use to listen to music: Ipod, CD, Cassette, 8-track, reel to reel, LP vinyl or other???

What else can you reflect upon as technology changes in your lifetime or what is the largest change that you have seen!!!

Answer these or add your own comments... (be nice... LOL)

My answers:

1: We used slide rules when I was a senior in HS... However, I remember that near the end of the school year, one student brought a handheld TI calculator to class... It would only add, subtract, multiply and divide, but we were amazed!!!

2: The first computer I used was an IBM that filled an entire room... We had to use 80 column cards to input programs and data... There were no keyboards on the computer, operation of the computer was done with toggle switches... However, years later, I was fortunate enough to get one of the early IBM PC computers at my work... It had a 5 1/4" 360k floppy disk drive that would boot the computer using DOS... Then you could put in your program disk and upload your program... It had 256k of RAM and NO hard drive...

3: IBM XT... 360k floppy drive, 256k RAM and 20mb hard drive... I believe it ran at 3.6mhz??? Hot Damn!!!

4: I can remember not having a TV... My Dad said they cost too much and you could only get one or two channels... LOL our first TV was the size of a chest of drawers and only had about a 12" B/W screen...

5. Yes, no cellphones... I used to have to carry a pager at work...

6: I can remember party lines and having to ask the operator to connect you to the number that you wanted... (BR549... LOL)

7: Obviously for me analog... Timex...  :-)

8: I remember my older brother getting a record player and several 45rpm records for Christmas one year... Probably the Mom's and Pop's... LOL...

Sorry for the diversion from Pepper related posts....

I remember all that stuff!

What I've noticed the most is that technology is making people stupid. We depend on it way too much. The purpose of it is to enhance and assist, not rule. The advancements are excellent, unfortunately it's at the detriment of our youth and parents don't seem to care.

1. What calculator did you own as a senior in high school??? By the time I got to HS, we had TI scientific calculators

2. What was the first computer that you used??? Probably my cousin's Commodore. Isn't that the one that had the little cassette tapes for data storage?

3. What was the first computer that you owned??? Tandy 1000. I remember my dad crashed it and rebuilt it many times while trying to learn his way around it.

4. Do you remember B/W television??? Yep. Had a little pedestal B&W in my bedroom.

5. Do you remember life without a cellphone??? YES! My mom got me a pager when I was in my late teens so she could get in touch with me.

6. Do you remember when home phones were attached to the wall??? Yep. And they were all rotary dial. I remember the operator, too.

7. Was you first watch digital or analog??? Analog. Our TV "clicker" had 5 buttons. The power button was orange. We had a huge house antenna. And we learned our way around aluminum foil for the rabbit ears.

8. What did you first use to listen to music: Ipod, CD, Cassette, 8-track, reel to reel, LP vinyl or other??? Vinyl. My first portable device was an 8-track player with an 8" speaker in the side... like an 8-Track "walkman". I remember my aunt (mom's youngest sister) gave me all of her old 8-Tracks... it's where I got my first copy of Skynyrd, ZZ-Top, Jethro Tull, etc.

Wouldn't trade those times for the world. We actually had to go outside and play when we were young, because that's what we had to do!

I think the invention that has been the most detrimental to humankind has been the microwave. What other invention has there been that has made us so impatient? We now stand by tapping our foot impatiently waiting for 60 seconds to tick by.
