Alrighty folks! It's almost plant out time and that means that my basement and lights are going to be freed up for some crossing projects through the summer.

I have 4 DWC buckets available for growing peppers indoors all summer. (not to mention racks for seedling growout)
2 spots are already taken by White Fatalii and CGN-21500.

These Plants will be the Base for all my other crosses. Meaning that I will use pollen from plants that are outdoors in the rest of my collection crossed with these. These will be tagged and harvested and grown out in the basement to choose phenos. I'm planning on going for taste more than heat.

Plants to choose from

My biggest focus will be crossing the White Fatalii with CGN-21500 but will do plenty of other crosses with them as well.

Here is my entire grow list and potential candidates to be crossed with my final choices (hope that makes sense)

Once the poll is complete Thursday night- the two winning plants will be moved to the hydro system and this thread will serve as my grow log for this project.

Y'all are more than welcome to offer suggestions as to what you would like to see crossed with what as well. I'm sure I will be sharing seeds with most of you at some point (prolly F2? maybe some F1's)

I got some D3 goat f4, aji painapple f2, el scorponero orange f3 and el scorpenero f2 seeds from the Capcom seed train. I only took a few of each so hopefully I get good germination. Will keep you updated.

I wasn't happy with any of the f2 aji painapple I grew this year so didn't have any f3 seeds to send out. I'll regrow f2 next year as well.

Hey hey

Got at least 8 seedlings from each plant now, 16 are already outside in growbags, the rest are still here.

Awesome, glad they germinated for you. Had me worried. I ended up not getting very many seeds from the omni bonnet. They literally only had 1-0 seeds per pod. Most of them were runty. Hopefully I manage to get at least one or two to germinate in the spring.

We had some hail 2 days ago, I lost 8 plants, but lucky most were replaced with the spare seedlings. The only thing I lost that I didnt have replacements of is the F4 Pale Yellow, So down to 6 plants of that. Still holding on to spare seedlings and will put them out once they get a bit bigger.

So still all up should have about 50 plants once all the spares are planted out, and hopefully with a good success rate will have a decent set of options to test next year.

Will update in a week or two once they've all hopefully taken off.

Hey D3monic, I'm sure interested in getting into cross breeding and had a question you might be able to answer.

I've read it is possible to cross hot peppers with bell peppers but I've never seen it done.
I am super interested in trying to breed a variety of peppers that are quite large in size like bell peppers - but have heat to them like ghost/scorpions/reapers do. I make my own hot sauces like I'm sure a lot of these forum users do, and would love to have a plant that produces very large hot peppers to supply my constant need for super hots.

I'm sure D3monic will have plenty to say here, but from own experience - bell peppers are just capsicum annnums, so yup they should cross sweet. I tried crossing those with reapers myself 1 year trying to achieve exactly what you were after but had no luck. TBH I think it's just my crappy crossing technique, if D3 tried doing it how he does it, I'm sure we'll be growing out some insanely large annuum/chinense crosses.

I'm new to these forums (as you might be able to tell) but I have this fascination of this specific cross breed. For me it makes the most sense, to try to get the largest hottest peppers. I suppose another route would be perhaps crossing a very high yeilding thai chili with a super hot? Then perhaps just getting about a hundred smaller super hot variations? Another interesting idea for sure.

I really hope to get a few experienced growers onto this idea, a handful of people with the same goals in mind for creating this pepper. If I were to manage to get ideal results I would definitely be up for sharing the seeds.

I dont know, for some reason me imagining a scorpion or reaper as big as your fist is just exciting to me, might be a rewarding challenge for an experienced breeder

Have moved all the growbags to the most sheltered part of the property, its all surrounded by a short hedge, and then its next to the house, with a fence and a few olive/mandarin trees on the other side, so heaps of wind shelter.

Will plant out the rest of the spare seedlings next weekend, but yeah I think pale yellow F4 is the only one that's had issues, which is a bit gutting since it's risking an entire season of growing that pheno, but the other F4 (and all F3s) are doing good so far.

Sweet man yeah I've just ended up potting the rest out, the weather is a bit crap but its a solid 18 degrees (65F) outside so they'll be just fine I think.

So all up including the spares and replacements I'm at 49 growbags. Have dumped a ton of snail bait out there as there are slugs all over the place at the moment so that'll take care of them. Normally the first couple of weeks of December is where I notice a massive ramp up in growth so will update soon.

I think there's a Scotch Bonnet x Bell Pepper going around somewhere. Not sure who's cross it was, but I'm pretty sure I've seen it. I'll try to find a picture.

Edit: Only pic I could find was from Peppernorth's webshop: https://peppernorth.com/bonnet-bell. It wasn't the one I saw before because I never heard of the store before, but it's the same thing.

Nice! I might have to use this as a start point for another interesting cross!

Thanks for this!

I'm looking at trying a few Bell X ??? myself this season. I'd imagine it would definitely be doable, but would take a few generations, and some potential back-crossing. But what doesn't?
