High cholesterol?

My recent blood work showed an LDL reading of 254 mg/dl and the doctor wants to put me on statin medication but I refuse to use them after doing some research.
Has anyone here studied this subject and have something to add?

I will add this: the doctor knows way more than you and what you can learn even if you spent 2 years researching on the internet.

True about carbs. Nothing affects your cholesterol more apart from genetics and weight. Something like 85% of cholesterol is made by your liver - in response to sugar/carb consumption.

I am only slightly over weight and have high cholesterol. My grandpa was rail thin and had high cholesterol, so I think genetics plays a big roll for me. I'm on a low dose generic statin and take lo-niacin (over the counter). I seem to tolerate those well. Cutting carbs, losing weight and exercise helps - but it's still not enough for me. I've learned you can't beat yourself up too much if alternative lifestyles aren't working. You can only fight genetics so much.

Also, there is lots of new research that cholesterol in of itself isn't the main culprit for heart attacks and stroke. Rather, it's sugar/carbs and the body's inflammatory responses. So, that reinforces my view that cutting out starchy carbs (along with excercise, and meds if necessary) is the way to go for me.

The internet has clearly made you more educated than any doctor could imagine...

Doctors like to make fun of the internet too. Then they try to sell you drugs that kill you.

Clearly you have nothing much to add to any conversation.

Make sure you get some extra vaccinations.

Look what I found on the internet.

Man, you are so smart. Way smarter than I...that's why I use sarcasm, because I'm witless. In all reality though, not everyone needs confirmation of their intellect by strangers on message boards. You would be much more pleasant if you turn off the a-hole switch and toned down your insecurities.

Sorry for the derailment PMD...never thought suggesting listening to your doctor would turn into an opportunity for Heckle to flex his patronizing personality
