Passiflora Showoff Thread

Back in 2013 I planted two Maypop (Passiflora incarnata) seedlings because they are native, edible and look really cool. In 2014 they spread to 20 vines. This year there are over 50 vines.

I've been tempted to try growing the more tropical species in containers. So what Passifloras do you guys have?

Yay that is wicked!  Where are they native to?

Never mind I looked it up. Pretty much from Indiana to Texas and eastward.  Will they grow from cuttings?  If so I would love to have a few!  My mom is a really big native flower grower.

I have read that the root can be cut and replanted. I haven't tried it yet, but I will if they outgrow their area. Occasionally, I have seen them at garden stores sold as a named cultivar. I guess those are a cutting.

I started my plants from seeds. It took three months and only two out of ten sprouted.

Another one native to almost the same area is Passiflora lutea. I found this one growing wild along the Anacostia River in Washington D.C.

Is it just the one vine? The year after I planted mine, vines were coming up within five feet of the original.

That is a huge patch. Pick through it periodically, you might find flowers or fruit hiding in there.

I got the first flowers of the season to open today.

unfortunately it's 100% vine. I don't ever see flowers develop

Cool shots.

I often make a night tea using the dried leaves and stem of Incarnata. It's one herb that works for me as a mild sedative. I would love to grow one myself but as I can already get the dried plant matter easily enough, I've decided to keep the spot in the garden open for somethng else.

I'm thinking maybe one of the native Australian passifloras...

I planted these seeds outside and they did not sprout for over a year.

I think I can recall reading somewhere that a wait that long is not uncommon. Think I'll be chasing a live vine just in case... haha.

My first flowers opened on July 1st this year. Four of them opened. I have a feeling that this plant is going to get big this year. It is starting to branch like crazy.
