Coffee Roasters

Do any of you roast your own coffee beans and is so what do you use for this process ? I'm considering a manual popcorn popper that you crank by hand on the stove top.

I found the Cuisinart Hot air popper the best for popcorn, and if you have qood quality corn then almost all are poped.
Coffee roast I know one guy that does his own and looks great, would love to but it does make allot of smoke from what I hear and cost a few bucks to roast . Just looking, seams they have some smokeless ones.

I havent done it yet, but I bought the poplite and 100' extension cord ...

hear you want to get 100' away, because of the smell/smoke, besides it neutering the temp (in a positive way) ...

Nah, smells wonderful!  It only really starts to smoke after the 2nd crack begins.

I have been roasting for a couple years using a westbend poppery 2 air popper.  It recently burned out one of the two filaments, so now it gets really close to the 2nd crack, but not quite.  I would buy it again in a heartbeat, and I probably will pretty soon unless I decide to go with an actual roaster.

The issue you will have with a whirley popper is the smoke though because you will need to do it indoors unless you use propane.  A good hood should clear most of it though.

BTW, you can not get 100' away and get a good roast.  You need to be right on top of it.  Judging the level of roast is all about being able to clearly hear it.  I don't look at the beans at all.  It is all about listening to the cracking to know when to pull it.

Then you need to cool it down as quickly as possible.  I just use a colander and shake the beans back and forth.  I have used a coffee can with both ends cut open before though too.  Add a screen to the bottom and attach a computer fan below the screen.

Here is a pretty lengthy post I made on the roasting process.

site or more likely tapatalk garbled my long post ...

the 100' meant me and the popper going 100', and the length of extension decreases the wattage pr voltage or whatever, making the doneness window wider for cooking more gently, making it easier to hit as a noob ...

I should of got the one with the clear top but I was a cheapskate lol. I prefer a lighter/blonde roast so after the 2nd crack I will be done with the roast.
After the first crack!  After the second crack you will have charred beans.

End of 1st for light (blonde), just a few seconds into the 2nd for medium, 30-45 seconds into the 2nd for dark.

If you wait for the 2nd to end, you will be left with completely burnt coffee.
thanks !

After you become successful at pulling at the end of the 1st, you can experiment with pulling slightly prior to it ending if you really like lighter roasts.
