Coach's 2016 Glog

I just read my first glog post from last year again and was embarrassed. Last year was the first year I grew peppers from seeds and learned a flipping ton from this site & this site alone, really. I had a lot of experience gardening but there were a lot of tricks to growing peppers from seeds that I had to figure out. Once I dialed it all in, it was smooth sailing. I ended up with 280 plants & 180 varieties in 2015... thousands & thousands of pods and very few problems after they started growing true leaves. Beginner's luck. I grew a lot of things I didn't care for and others that were OK but unspectacular, along with finding some really outstanding varieties. I learned A LOT in the past year- not that I don't have plenty more to learn. A huge thank you to all who have shared seeds with me and given me other advice.

If I'm being completely honest, I have to admit aesthetics are a huge part of why I enjoy growing peppers. Yes, I like the heat and taste and I consume hot peppers at least once a day, but looks are really important too. Too much of my time is spent looking at pictures of peppers. :) Some of the annuums don't excite me much but are good eating. Besides that, I don't have any that I'm not excited about because of heat/taste and aesthetics.

I'll add a few, I'm sure but I'm pretty content with what I've started. I'm always interested in dark plants, yellow pods and superhots crossed with small pods so my eyes are still open for a few more.

Here are some I've started.

I spent most of today working on this greenhouse with my dad. Almost done. 10'x16' & about 8' tall. I'm pretty pleased with the way it's coming out.

Beautiful garden Rick. I like the looks of the cardi x Bhut. Glad to hear it tastes good. I didn't know there was a Naga x Tabasco yellow. I grew some red ones last year. Kicking myself for not growing this year.

Great pics.

I hope you feel better. You seem to get hit with something every year.

Get well.
Maybe it's b/c it's early in the season & I don't have much to compare to but the Yellow Cardi x Bhut was one of those "WOW! This is my favorite pepper" experiences. Ask me again in 3 weeks. :) I have yellow & orange Naga x Tabasco. Orange hasn't ripened yet.

Tell me about it! Broken arm in the fall (no pun intended!), parasite last summer, pneumonia now. My daughter had it until 2 weeks ago. She was wiped out for 2 weeks & had a 103-104 fever. Hopefully, I'll feel a little better this weekend. Thanks!

Look at all that space, looks great.  I would love to have that room.  Unfortunately most of my property is front yard.  I got some of those Nebru's from trident also.  Have 4 plants going but no pods yet or none bigger than a pea anyway.  They look like something I am going to love.   Really like the yellow supers.   Hows that chocolate stripes tomato?  Looks great.   Have become more partial to those nice round ones vs beefsteaks that get grooved and mishapen on the top.   Relly like the darks ones for BLTs.   I cut my tomatoes back this year only have 8, they all were dead last year by this time from non stop rain.  This year its been super dry and they look great so far, but that could change quickly.
Yeah, we were fortunate... Until 15 months ago, we lived 30 minutes from the school I teach at & the cluster my daughter attends. We had a decent sized yard & the last year we lived there I'd built some raised beds and put a lot of work into building something better. The space was maximized including a squash in the front yard as "an ornamental." Once I went a little "pepper crazy" in the fall of 2014, I wanted something bigger- not just for peppers but for the whole garden. We bought the first house we looked at mainly because it's 1 mile from my school, but also for the garden space. I had about the same luck last year due to the weather. Unbelievably hot for NC & tomatoes rotted from too much rain. Nothing really produced EXCEPT for peppers. I had pretty good luck with them. :) This year is almost as hot 96-101 more often than not, when 86 is the historical average high in June. Very dry. We miss all the storms, it seems. I've been watering & everything seems OK so far.

Take care. I look forward to seeing your incredible collection of pods soon enough!!! I'm still in awe of that list.

OH- and the Chocolate Stripes tomoato- I'm a little dubious about "gimmicky" tomatoes. I'd say the taste of those is on par with most dark tomatoes- if you like 'em, you'd like these. Good eatin'.

CARDI Yellow. Not a great phenotype, but very large.

I got 2 phenotypes of 7JPN x Moruga last year- one beefier & one more lantern. Beefier was a little tastier. Latern was a more beautiful plant & pod, I thought. I grew both this year.

Maraba cross I got from Peter S, CARDI Yellow, Peach Sugar Rush (not impressed), BOC, Peach Fatalii cross, BOC x Primo, Yellow Moruga that fell off the plant early, CGN 21500:

2 different 7JPN x Moruga phenos from last year. Both ripened dark purple to red but the top pheno never got truly red. More of a wine color:

Seeds from pods of the top plant produced these this year. Still ripened dark purple to wine color:

Peach Fatalii cross from last year:

Seeds from that very pod produced this this year. Smoother & more orange/yellow than peach:

Things are looking good! I bet you're bogged down with garden work - holy cow that's a huge garden!  We just got into chickens this year as well.  I was surprised by how much I am enjoying them.  I hope things are going well.

Nice pods, interesting how different new strains can grow.  I had a great pheno of the 7JPN last year, ripened to a burnt orange color.  This year its totally different.  Might probably be crossed, but sure is looking interesting.

These pods grown by a friend this year, mine last year were just like these.

Heres what I have going this year.  Will be interesting to see how it ripens.  Pods are going to be pretty good size I think, and right now feel solid so must be very thick walled just like the ones above were last year.

I kinda fell off the face of the earth... or at least THP.
Season finished out well but far more than I could do anything with. Planning on 40-50 plants this season with more focus on the rest of the garden.
I plan on doing a better job of keeping up with THP. Missed it.
