Finally - Tomato Juice!

Hey, I'm still waiting for my superhot peppers to ripen!

A lady read about how I enjoy gardening and preserving juice and called yesterday. She is too old (82 or so she said) to do any canning and she wondered if I would be interested in a tomato strainer. I was more than willing to take it off her hands and she brought it down today.

It is the cat's meow, let me tell you. Only juice and puree make it through the sieve, while the skin and seeds come out the end. Much better than the type that mashes the tomatoes and you have to go clockwise for two turns and counter-clockwise for a turn.

I told her it would probably be a few days before I could give it a test run - I was wrong. I knew I had one tom that was ripe, but it is only about six, maybe eight ounces. But one thing led to another and I ended up with maybe four-five pounds of red ripe fruits.

Washed and boiled them (found out I don't need to) and put them in the gizmo. How fast and easy! I only got a quart of juice but this is 100 times easier than using the other grinder or a food processor and then straining out the seeds and skin.

Last year, if I could save 20 quarts a night, it was fantastic. This year that will take maybe an hour.

Hey WW, sounds very different to the 'mouli' i suggested in another thread.. Could you post a picture please? I am intrigued!

Ringsting,

The next time I set it up, hopefully no later than Friday, I snap some pix of it.

I just found a different sieve, one meant to use for fruits such as strawberries or blackberries. It has never been used before. But this thing will mean the pulp is really fine and not a single seed will get through.

You can even use it to deseed any of your other sauces. I have one simular to yours, except I only have 1 mesh.
When your working with the tomatoes, push the seeds through at least twice.
It's worth it for the extra juice. If you want it a little hot, push a habanero through to. Get creative, make your own Spicy V-8.

A very Kind lady wordwiz..think i need to get me a strainer my toms aren't doing to great got lots..but need the sun,But what a great present and imagine the possibilities when all those chilis are ready to :)

I don't like tomato juice but I make loads of tomato sauce with my tomato mill. I'm even thinking of buying the industrial model but this year has been terrible for my tomatoes

I love tomato juice with Worcestershire sauce.
I love tomato juice with just a bit of salt and pepper, but that sounds good. I'll give it a try (just bought a new bottle of Worcestershire sauce). how 'bout trying some HP sauce, or am I being crazy here?

I've never tried it with HP sauce (I love HP sauce) I think it would work OK if you gave it a good stir, I mean you don't want gloops of brown bits floating in it. I take it you mean the standard HP sauce, they do a few types over here. Marmite in tomato juice would be gorgeous, I suppose I'd have to dissolve the Marmite in a bit of hot water first then add it. I'm having a 'mad for marmite' week.

HP "The Original"... ya know, brown sauce. :)
I wish I had some Marmite, Vegimite or something of that sort... oh well.
*Makes a tomato juice/HP sauce blend*

Let us know how it tastes. In the UK we have the classic HP and a fruity version as well as 3 BBQ types and another 4 different ones in the 'World Range'. I'm surprised you can't buy Marmite along with these other English products. Can you buy lemon curd and Pot Noodles?

* Sorry Wordwiz we're just trying to work out how to make Tomato juice taste even better, obviously minus the lemon curd, that would be plain nasty.

Ya the HP and tomato juice is a big no-no. doesn't taste awful, just that the tomato juice alone is much better.

Yes on some of the HP sauces and Pot Noodle, but no on the rest.

No problem, I always thought it was a requirement to sort of stray from the original topic! ;)

Every few years I make a spicy ketchup from some juice. I don't have a recipe, at least I cannot find it, but I use Pickling Spices, cinnamon, lemon juice, cider vinegar, a couple of bay leaves and any other spices that look good. It's not so much for putting on hamburgers or hot dogs but I do use some when making meat loaf, vegetable soup, chili, BBQ sauce and a few other dishes.
