My Garden Plants Glog

Nice!
you dont think you might have problems transplanting them with the shape of the top ?
I don't have to disturb the plant, just lift out the net cup and place in a larger reservoir. I've already done that with some chile plants and onion plants.

I just moved some of my Stevia plants from the dirt to the "juice". Yes, another Kratky experiment! Because this is a budget operation the containers from left to right are: a cashew jar from Sams Club, 2 cottage cheese containers, and a mayonaise jar, all with a shot of flat black paint on them!

Does the Kratky method work? You be the judge. Here is some lettuce that was all started in the grow bag on the right. 4 seedlings got their roots washed off and put in net pots in the bucket around March 5. Can you see the difference in growth? Also, lights and all other conditions were the same.

Just wandered around my fairly empty(at this time) garden area and see that I have a few spears of asperigus coming up, and the horseradish is getting a good start.

Here's a "Meatball" Eggplant early on in it's small(peanut jar) Kratky container.

And here it currently is in a larger(5 gallon bucket) Kratky container.

The next step will be into an even larger(32 gallon garbage can) Kratky reservoir.

Went to the store(Menards) and picked up a tub.

Drilled some 1 inch holes in it for drainage.

Filled it with a "Special Blend" of potting mix/soil.

Planted my Kossak Kohlrabi's in it that have been in small pots way to long.

Now, I just have to wait and see if they get as big like they are supposed to.

Another little Kratky experiment. I bought a six pack of cabbage plants and the've been in the little starter cells way to long!

Root bound like little bricks.
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1468120882.996008.jpg

I cut the bottom open to try to wash the dirt out. Not happening.

I picked up a few 5 gallon totes from the local dollar store, and painted them to keep the light out. I cut two holes in the top of each one for the net pots and then put the nutrient solution in them.

I had a couple of doubles so I just whacked one in half with the knife, we'll see what happens!

Still couldn't get much dirt washed out of these either. The roots are dense!
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1468121529.652400.jpg

I put the plants in the net pots and filled them with Hydroton pebbles.

This is what I ended up with.

I put them on the shelf in the greenhouse and now it's a waiting game to see if they grow or die!!
I'll try to post an update in a couple of weeks.

Wondering about your horseradish. Did you do something to prevent it from running?
I haven't had that problem, probably because this is the first time my plants made it to the second year without being eaten from the bottom up by pocket gophers.

My wife and I just picked some of our eggplant fruits yesterday. The large globe shaped one is off of one of my Burpee "Meatball" eggplants thats in a large pot.
It weighs 15 oz/or 425 grams. The long cylinder shaped ones are off my wifes "Hansel" eggplant, notice that one(two?) grew siamesed. For comparison, the largest Hansel weighs 5.3 oz/or 151 grams. Should be able to slice the "Meatball" ones and they'll fit a burger bun!!

This is the best Stevia plant that I've grown in years. I'll start pulling some leaves off and dry them, then grind them into powder. I use the powder in most of my sauces as an awesome natural sweetener.

Two year ago I had a stevia plant that grew into a bush... about 5' tall and 4' wide. This year they've all crapped out. I wonder why. The only thing I can think of is the biochar I put in at the beginning of the year sucked up all of the minerals.
