Brocoli's 2016 Chiliskies

Greetings,

I've never done a Glog before, and I am new around here, but lets go!

This year is my 3rd year buying seeds and starting them on my own. I have been buying plants at big box stores for years before that. Its also my first year with a heat mat and germ dome. Makes it alot easier for sure. Last year I started around March 1st in a terrible seed blend and it put me far behind, but they all eventually caught up. I also moved during that time as well. So this year we are gonna boogie-oogie-oogie! (ihope)

So far my house has peppers and herbs on all the window sills, and I am starting more. I have a front bay window that gets good amount of light, its currently holding the germ dome and heat mat, maybe a dozen peppers in 3.5" white pots, red amaryllis, and 3 peppers in I think quarter gallon pots. (they let me know my house water/pump was bad, they look terrible but I wont give up on em! 2 are cuttings from a Golden Cayenne I was just messing around with and 1 Peach Hab that was throwing pods for me sitting my bedroom window, made good respesado tequila!)

I also use my bedroom window with a tray. it gets awesome morning light and indirect but bright light all day. I supplement it with a 27w all spectrum LED grow bulb. Ive had 3 rounds of planting seeds so far. I started planting on 1/10/16 and just planted some the other tonight.

I plan to get a few plants at local nurseries this year and I will add those in when I get them. Especially tomatoes, I only have room for so much in the house so its designated for the ones I cant find. I tried to overwinter some plants this year but they seem kaput, the pansies are still nice and green though.

The Indigo series of tomatoes has been itching me for the last few years, so this year I just want to scratch it good and try them all I could find! I think there was one called Sun Flare I had a few years ago but I couldnt find it. I know little about tomato species and origins and such.

Im conisdering getting another LED bulb as I am quite happy with these results. I need to do more research before I go and get a 600w or 1000w mh/hps/cmh light. I have 1 250w MH and 1 250w HPS gifted to me, but they are atleast 20 years old, I'm nervous to use them.

Everything is in Pro-mix BX mixed with Happy Frog potting soil. I mix in a 5g bucket at the moment and probably do 4:1 Pro-mix to HF. So far everyones happy. Seeds started in Miracle Grow Seedling Blend with good results. I used Organic Mechanics seed blend last year with pretty disastrous results.

Everything will go outside eventually into anything from 5-15g pots. Some if I have doubles Ill just plant outside as throw aways in flower beds or wherever. I cant bring myself to just trash a pepper, I figure planting it anywhere is better than just trashing it. Since theres only a few 10-15g pots, I havent decided who gets the big pots yet. Always a fun job.

As soon as I figure out a mobile pic uploader that works on android and here or get a cable for my PC, Ill upload new pics.

Corno Di Toro Giallo couldnt wait to give me peppers. One flower, One pepper. Sign of good things to come? Would be nice.

I just gave everyone a drink of 1/4th of Neptunes Harvest 2-3-1 yesterday. I might top them, but theyre giving me flowers, peppers and dividing themselves.

The white hab is looking poor, its been a runt, but if it takes off, who knows what it could give. If not, oh well I suppose.

I am planning on switching out whatever pepper is left in the germ dome and starting my tomatoes(and maybe a few more peppers if Ive forgotten/lost a few plants) tomorrow, but as you can see where do I put them?! Maybe I'll grab a grow tent if theyre not too expensive. Another thought was to grab a 50cell and just leave them in there until I plant out. Should fit in the germ dome fine.

@Floricole - Thanks, I'm using Imgur now. It resizes it for me!

@pepperguy1 - Its the list I have in this thread. I started planting seeds 1/10/16.

@jedisushi06 - Thanks, I'm hoping they taste as good as they sound.

Quick update.

Planted all tomatoes on 4/3 and also 2 Gypsy and 2 Filius Blue peppers because I had space. I found Blush Tomato seeds and Sprite tomato seeds also that I forgot I had. All in all I planted 2 seeds of each tomato into the middle 3 rows of a 50 cell tray.

Forgot to take pics of the tray and such, but heres other more interesting pics:

Update:

Since the last time I have watered with Neptunes Harvest and it looks like I have atleast one of every tomato up and running. They were getting really leggy so I took the dome off, I forgot to take a pic though.

I do have other pics though, but the Stanley Cup Playoffs are on, so first lets start off with a tasty beverage..

On a side note, friend and I brewed a Triple IPA with Mosaic, Cascade, and Sorachi Ace hops - which ended up more like a Double IPA - which might now turn into a Double IPL - this past weekend. Still awhile to go yet before I dry hop, but the bucket is a bubblin'.

Finally an update, cant believe its taken me so long. Terrible with taking pictures... but heres whats happened over the last few weeks..

5-4-16
Is that a Thrip?

My peppers have been outside since 4-24-16 as night time temps have been above 40F and forecast to be above 40F for sometime now. I have 1 tray of tomatoes (about 30) still in my bay window with my peach hab and 2 golden cayennes. I also have 1 more tray of peppers in my bedroom window under a light.. theyre about to go outside as well.

The broken serrano still had a shoot so itll be fine and I got about 9 cuttings off of it, so we will see how many actually root. As I dont really care if they root or not, more of an experiment to see how much I can, I guess, abuse cuttings before they wont root. Just threw some soil in a cell tray, squished them in, and put them outside in a place that gets morning sun.

I really need to up pot, possibly this weekend or next. Its rained for 4 days now, brief afternoon sunshine. Suppose to rain for 2 more days too.. atleast be grey, foggy, and misty.

I'll get pics of whats left inside and whats going on outside tomorrow when I get home from work. Outside all I did was space out the peppers a bit, about 6 to a tray. Some snap peas are starting to come up as well, but I have them in one of the garden beds. I also ordered my pumpkin seeds tonight.. Jarrahdale, Porcelain Doll, and Moonshine, along with a Durango Outback Mix of Marigolds. Havent decided if I want to grow watermelon or cantaloupe/honeydew melons... gah, not enough space for everything I want!

Here is where everything is at right now:

I forget which one this is, its written on the side of the pot and I forgot to look at it. Again, I dont know why its looking terrible.. maybe thrips? I've see a one or two of those white bugs in the last pic in my last post, I dont know if its a product of all the rain weve had or bugs or over fertilize.

Between these guys (I dont know what to do to get rid of them minus Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew) and the Jap beetles, I have no idea how these roses are still alive. As soon as new growth comes, it gets devoured. Which is a shame, because I like roses.

Next thing I may do is pop all the peppers and buds off every pepper, but they keep giving buds and peppers, so I dont know if I even want to take the time to remove them, only for them to appear again in a few days.

Im glad I am doing this glog, (even though I dont post as much as I should,) but its helping me take a step back and look at what I really need to learn about and tackle next. Hopefully I can get these issues sorted out sooner than later.

:(

Im back finally..

No pics as of tonight, but I am dealing with a pretty good sized Broad Mite infestation going on at the moment. I also was given a good amount of more plants that I some how found room for. First a tasty beverage:

Belgian Strong Dark Ale with Coriander and Star Anise 11%

Well I sprayed Avid 6 days ago and watered in some Neptunes Harvest 0-0-1 4 days ago. The broad mites were pretty bad so I am still seeing new damage but I am assuming its due to the new mites that were hatched. I may spray again this weekend if I am still seeing damage. I tried to take pics a few times last week but the wind was insane, heres what I could get(I didnt get the label of everything, I will try and label from memory:)

CP345 - The top growth was absolutely slammed by mites, the bottom is relatively new, but it has been affected since this picture.

Thats is it for now, Ill try to get some pics up tomorrow of a week after the Avid spray.

But for now.. my beers empty.

I realized on Friday when I went to go spray avid again, that the first time I sprayed, I read my dropper wrong and was using it at like 1/7th of suggested strength. Sooo this time should be much better results than last time, I hope anyway. Since everything is now in fruiting, I really dont want to spray anymore.

Today, Sunday, I went around and staked up some of my plants and moved some things around. Its been raining just frequently enough for my pots to never dry out, its starting to annoy me as I cant feed my plants. Might just toss either tomato-tone or garden-tone in there and call it a day - feel like as soon as I do that it wont rain for weeks then.

I have noticed the 2 Trinidad Scorpion plants that were given to me, were mislabeled and are some type of thai pepper. I thought it wasnt a TScorp when it was given to me because of the leaves, oh well, no scorps for me this year. I have plenty of other stuff to burn my face off with anyways. :fireball: :onfire:

Also noticed that on some of my peppers in the ground I am having something munch my leaves, am assuming snails. I havent found any of the perps yet, but I am not too worried about it.

Dont think I mentioned that I try to have a good amount of companion plants around, in pots around my potted garden I have marigolds, sage, lavender, rosemary, salvia, cone flower, sweet annie,(and grapes, blueberries.) They also make the black containers look less of a eye sore. Around my house I have flower beds and a variety of different species, perennial and annuals. I hope to promote good sources of food for the good guys, I dont like to spray unless I have too. I like to see alot of bug activity. :welcome:

Friend and I brewed a Smash IPA yesterday, t-minus 14 days until bottle time. Shooting for 8-9% ABV. Used Pilsner malt and Amarillo hops.

Now for the pics!

Those Filius Blue look awesome! nice selection :)
Thanks! This is my second year growing them. Look nice, and are nice to munch on when in the garden. Just a little "dont mind if I do" :)

Great job on beating the mites, your plants look great!
Dont *think* I am quite out of the woods yet with the mites, but it is alot better in most areas. I feel like my Plant Zeroes are still infested, but I dont know, guess I'll just have to wait another week. Hoping what I am seeing is the last of new hatchling damage and a bit of me over-analyzing.
Thanks! I have way too many plants this year. A lot of the plants I was given are in 2g containers just so they will give me some pods to try. I dont feel like I should waste soil on a bigger pot for a pepper I may not like the taste of. I think my last count was 126 total tomato/pepper(/2 eggplant/1 tomatillo,) last year I had probably 50 plants, if that.

I've noticed I havent shared a few plants yet that are in the ground.. I'll have to get pictures of them, some ballin' lookin' tomatoes. (Maybe I'll do an inground update of just my inground plants.) But for now heres a Very small update:

I sprayed epsom salt on Tuesday night, and today when I got home I fertilized with Dyna-Gro Grow. Im thinking a spray of Neptunes Harvest over the weekend would be a good thing too, we'll see how I feel about it come weekend. I'll let my plants tell me.

And since I worked 7-3 in a hoop house with a heat index of 105F, I think I deserve one of these..
rFC2YW1h.jpg

Pale Ale 5.5%
Hopefully wont be in that hoop house all day tomorrow too!

I was walking around looking at my plants and found this-
CW3B4xVh.jpg

Jamaican Hot Chocolate Habanero cant decide what type of pod it wants to push out! (2 elongated[one on either side of pumpkin] and 1 pumpkin shape)

Just a small update, hope to have more pics up by the end of the weekend.. of what? I have no idea.

SOB...

I dropped my phone on my sidewalk when I went to take the first pic last weekend.. I hoped to have a new phone by now, but there really isnt anything I like out there... I miss my LG G2 :'(

well.. since my last update I have used all my dyna-gro grow, and I dont feel like purchasing more, especially with the rain being pretty frequent the last month, its been hard to liquid feed as much as I want too. So I decided to just use what I have around and see how that goes. So I have a bag of Tomato-tone and Garden-tone. I've decided to do a little experiment. Since I dont have 2 plants in pots that are the same/similiar, I decided to use a random amount of plants that only got Tomato-tone and the rest got Garden-tone. I put blue flags in the pots that got Tomato-tone. Its been about 4 days since I applied the x-tones. I even have some pots in Pennington soil(I hear they use that at Camden Yards. Go O's! [unless its the world series and theyre up against the Phillies, then go Phil's! I'm a Philly native,]) I also have a couple in Miracle Gro Potting Soil... and if I remember right, a few in the shi--y Hyponex soil but I amended it heavily with perlite. So now every pot is just a 'water and forget' pot, so I dont have to give the wife special instructions on which pots are what, if she waters when I am not home. I plan to reapply Tomato-tone and Garden-tone in the first week of September. The bags say they last a month, so I'll add a week or so to that, since I didnt really measure out how much on each pot. I took a 2.5" pot and scooped up the x-tone and shook it around the edges of the pot, and it covered about 3-5 pots depending on the size. Most plants are heavy with pods and tons of flowers coming in. August and September are going to be goooooooooooood(hopes placed on bets) but I am not producing for anything special, I grow mostly because I love to see what comes from it..... and I am still trying to find my favorite peppers. I love the superhot looks/flavors, but I have a terrible stomach which ruins me most days, but Capsaicin is too beneficial to not to want to try to incorporate in my diet. Its an insane fine line I walk with eating hot peppers, but if I stay under my limit, I am okay. Yeah I get the firery pewps in the morning, but it feels... good. Weird to say, but when your stomach feels like crap all the time and then you get a "normal" fire feeling from eating hot peppers, it makes you feel normal. I dont know if that makes sense to most people.. If not, I can try to explain better, just ask.

OKay so update without pics...

The Jamaican Hot Chocolate with different pods on the same plant.. the pumpkin shape hasnt really grown, but both elongated pods turned into wicked looking t shapes. They are nasty looking and if given to me, Id assume a superhot... I believe the seeds were from Sherwood seeds as an x-mas present.

I have Golden Bhut Jolokia's coming in as well, they look like normal tiny Bhuts.

I have a Numex Suave Orange almost ripe, it went from yellow to orange in the last few days, I am going to wait a few more, if not a week, then pick and taste it. I havent tried these before, so I want to make sure they are ripe.

Those Red Hot Carribean crosses are still putting out long pods that have a point to the end. some are even starting to look like a J. Very interested to see what they look and taste like when red. Maybe they crossed with my Thai Dragons or Chi Chein's(if I spelled that right, Its about half as hot as a thai dragon.) I have atleast 2 of those plants, if not 3.

I have a nice bush of Trinidad Perfume's coming in as well and the second is bushing out now.

The Mexican Jalapenos are ripe, but I dont know if they change color or not, a bunch of a good looking green gems on there with new ones just coming in as of a few days ago. I dont like jalapeno flavor much, but maybe I havent found the right one yet.

I moved some plants that looked to be problematic away from the main group of plants, that way if they are infectious, they will be yards away.

Good amount of tomatoes coming in aswell.

WIsh I could post some pics up, but my tablet only has a 5MP camera... which is a huge step down from my G2's 13MP camera.

Guess I'll wrap it up with that, since pics are what matters since words can only paint a picture and not actually show it! Hopefully I'll be back soon with pic's.. maybe I'll settle on the LG G5.
