Hey guys,
So I know I fell off THP for a year or two lol :P
 
My hobbies seem to come and go in phases. Well any way, I am getting in the Home brew pretty deep. Call it my new addiction.
 
I though growing peppers was expensive :snooty:  Nice brewing equipment will cost you 200-300 just to get going with 5 gallon batches. So I am ofc looking to cut costs anywhere I can with out hurting quality. One way is to grow my own hops!
 
 
My questions to you guy are:
  • Whats the best soil type for hops?
  • PH for water important?
  • Trellising
  • Fertilizers organic/synthetic either way?
  • Any thing that will be helpful is greatly appreciated!
 
Hops are invasive weeds, so be careful. They are easy to grow. All you have to do is water them. Hops are so cheap that growing them to cut cost is a bit counter intuitive, but grow them for the novelty of brewing with homegrown hops. It's pretty cool. You can train hop bines to do anything you want.

see the hops in the wine barrel? I've never fed them...just water. BUT they love light and nitrogen
 
I would say 1lb because it's established. Don't expect too much your first year unless you buy big crown....most people start with rhizomes.

Yup that's what I am starting out with. Do you think plastic totes are big enough for the first year?

10 gallon. this way I have the roots contained and can easily move them next year if needed. I will drill holes for drainage.

I am getting rid of mine this year, I had them growing up the front of my house for shade. 20 feet high and 20 feet wide. 2 feet thick. They were great while they lasted but I am over them. They don't care about Ph and all that. Just water. The rhizomes are about 4 inches in diameter and 10 feet long. The only thing that will ruin hops are those friggen spider mites. If you are in a dry climate, like me, it will do you well to hit all of the leaves with a hose a couple times a week. Spider Mites hate humidity which we have none of here in N. Central WA.
 
I sent Wheebs a PILE of hops one year when he was brewing in Florida. I guess the "fresh hop beer" was so good he got written up in the local paper. I'll try to find the pics.
 
Good luck, but you won't need it. Once those bastards get established, you'll rethink some very critical choices you've made in your life. :rofl:
 
I wasn't trying to be snarky, but I meant, in the container on your deck. :D
 
Mine are nasty, aggressive, assholes. They run into the yard, get all up under my roofing, wrap all around my hydrant to the point you get cut up to turn the sprinklers on. "Keep them trimmed" you may say. Ha! That's cute. LOL
 
Mine are gone this year. If I kept them up, my house would look like this:

Yep....they must stay contained...I have some in the ground that are under control for the time being but I think I'm just going to dig em up and toss them, or give them away...
