Cacti Thread

lol. Yeah, that would be my contribution as well. I mostly have a ton of older San Pedros. I got some babies of Peruvian Torch and Achuma going as well... and a couple that were crossed (Peruvianus X Bridgesii) i'm stoked for.

It's tricky to snap a photo of their blooms. I'm always really happy when I see them in time. They're huge :)

Funny that a lot of us are into Cacti also. I actually posted a pic of mine in my glog last year.

I have several varieties. I'm not sure what most of them are though.

My grandpa had this ball type cactus that was about 75lbs total and had completely grown over the pot it was in. He says his original would be 30 plus years old now. About maybe 8 to 10 years ago I took roughly 12 or so balls from it and planted them. He broke most of it up shortly after. They have done well, but I've never gotten them to flower, they grow 6 to 8 in stems and have these big (5") pink flowers on the stems once per year for him.

Here are mine now, plus the original they came off of and pic of it flowering...

For him, they were more ball shaped, for me, they are all elongated.

I had 2 or 3 others also, but lost them a few years ago. They are in my basement right now, but go outside during the summer months.
Sadly, I forgot these outside for too long this past fall and every single one of these froze and died except for my Christmas cactus that was inside. I was super bummed when I realized what I did. I had some of these for 10+ years now.

I did go snag a few more of the ball type cacti (Echinopsis) from my Grandpa this week though and he also gave me a cutting (I say cutting, but he rooted and planted it last season, so it's not really a cutting any more) from his Plumeria tree while I was there. I didnt take any pics yet, but I'll get some tomorrow and upload. Starting my collection over again.

His Echinopsis was flowering a bit while I was there so I did get a pic of that though...

That thing is amazing! I need to see if I can find one locally or order a cutting from somewhere online.

Snapped some pics today of the new additions!

For size reference, the two larger ones are in 6 inch clay pots. Then a 4 inch and 3 inch.

And the Plumeria tree. This one should be pink or dark pink flowers when it blooms. My Grandpa's had tons of buds when I picked it up, but they hadn't opened yet.

Say, how did you get that cactus to bloom? I think I have the same type that is pretty old and never flowered.

I had my previous ones for over 10 years and they never flowered either. My Grandpa's flowers every year. He doesn't do anything special... he says just leaves it alone and gives it some miracle grow once in a while, lol.

I think previously mine were not getting enough sunlight at my old house, I had them only getting a little bit of light from the north. Now this year, at my new house, they are on the deck and will get direct sunlight from about 10am to 5 or 6pm.

He has his on the south side of his house and they get direct sun from about noon until 4pm or so when the sun goes behind the trees. Those two bunches you see in the previous pictures above with the one flower, started from just one ball each about 4 years ago from the huge overgrown one with all the flowers in my original post that I quoted from last year.

I don't know how he does it, haha.

Edit: also, it seems once they get pot-bound, they flower even more.

Well dang. So the trick it to leave them alone. Lol I'll try... But that's a tall order!

A lot of times cacti need to experience a long, cool, dry dormant period to get them "in the mood" to flower. The increase in sunlight, temperature and moisture that breaks the dormant season is what triggers flowering.
Granted this is all hearsay by me. I have yet to successfully trick my cacti into thinking it's "time".

Yes, I cant believe I forgot to mention that!... Giving cacti a dry dormant period in the winter is probably the most important thing you can do to get them to flower. Normally these one my grandpa and I have don't flower until around August. This year they flowered a bit early.

Hey Savina,

I know this post is a year old now, but where did you order your Desert Rose from? Was it a quality plant and do you have any current pics of it?
I forgot where I ordered it from I will research and see if
i can find out. I know it was somewhere back on the east coast.
I will try and post a pick.

PlanetDesert.com just come some back in stock. They want $26 for one in a 4" pot. Bit pricey, but they look amazing in bloom when they get older.
