That just made my day!

How are they doing so far this spring? I just put mine outside last weekend and they got their first taste of rain on Sunday night. Now that they're getting some sunlight I'll probably give them a shot of fish emulsion and some more water soon. I'll get some pics of them once they wake up.

Also, the next person to respond to this thread gets a free rooted T. bridgesii cutting. :cool:

Went up to Lowe's again this weekend, it was hard to only leave with a few, they had a great selection still!

Picked up these 3:

Gymnocalycium Baldianum...

(Long spine pheno) Mammillaria Karwinskiana ssp. Nejapensis var. longispina "Royal Cross" or "Silver Arrows"... (Short spined version in my previous post a few up from here)

Chamaecereus x Lobivia "Rose Quartz"

Last but not least, an unknown variety, Cylindropuntia ssp. ??? "Mini Cholla"

I'm sure I'll be adding more soon!

Edit, and an updated pic of my Brasiliopuntia Brasiliensis that I bought last year. I noticed they has some new growth, so I tossed them into the grow tent a few weeks ago and they are doing great.

Heeeeell yes! That worked out great. I knew your name was familliar for some reason - you asked my back in July last year for cuttings. I didn't take any pachanoi cuttings last winter, (I know that's what you wanted) but I cut my bridgesii hedge back hard (you'll like them better anyway). T. bridgesii are way easier to grow IMO and I think they're prettier, especially when they start pushing new growth in spring when they start waking up.

Yeah, I'm surprised too. Since they are in the grow tent with fans and warmer air temps, I've been watering them once a week with Shultz Cacti & Succulent liquid fertilizer (2-7-7) at the recommended strength of 7 drops per quart of water. I have them in a homemade mix of 1/3 each of potting mix, perlite and coarse sand. It drains really well and they are completely dry a day or two later.

I don't know that depth matters all that much initially while you are waiting for roots to grow. Depending on the diameter of the cutting, I would say just use a small pot not much wider than the cutting. You don't want it to hold too much water because that will cause rot if there are not enough roots to suck up the water.

I pot my cuttings and wait about a month before watering at all. Then just a light watering and wait about 2-3 more weeks. Once I see new growth, it's a sign you can start whatever your normal watering schedule would be for it.

I can't remember the name of the technique, but what I do is put the potting mix in , then an inch(there abouts) layer of grit, then the cutting, then more grit on the sides of the cutting to hold it in place. Water as usual. The cutting senses the moist mix below, but isn't sitting in it, so it sends out roots to the moisture. The grit drys out, so it doesn't rot the cutting. Works for rooting easily rottable cuttings.

My mom accidentally used that technique to root a saguaro. Her's rotted, so she cut the top half off, that wasn't rotted, and placed it on some gravel in her garden. Threw out the bottom part and never got around to throwing out the top part. It rooted in place. She had been told that you couldn't root saguaros.

Unfortunately I lost my good camera to a...swamp.. and I will have to wait to replace it until I have the money.

In the mean time, here are some old photos of my hylocereus from a few years back (I think Physical Graffiti and Purple Haze, and possibly red I no longer have.) Recently I acquired two new varieties (Connie Mayer and Hana) that have not yet been planted, and I have about 16 seed cups full of various hylocereus types to see what I get (I have a few i have dubbed large white, maui pink, large purple, and purple round. unsure of actual species since they are store bought.) Hurricane Irma did a number on my garden that reduced it to a fraction of its former glory, and I eventually further reduced it. But what survived seems to be growing well.

first fruit of the season tasting. Physical Graffiti x Purple Haze...?? I think. If they self-pollinated, then one or the other. I am told by my sources these two won't cross pollinate. So I am not sure which variety self pollinated. Maybe Purple haze.

Nice! My Echinopsis Subdenudatum "Domino's Cactus" flowered a few days ago. It looked great!

These are baby "pinkish" dragon fruit. Unknown source variety.

New recruit!

And some other fruit. Raja Puri. 5 bunches at once..wtf. I think I sholved hacked them apart. My only explanation for this.

I had to do some surgery on a few cacti today. I recently acquired a few cuttings from California and New Orleans, some of which took immediately, some did not. Those that did not I pulled up and examined further. I noticed that the cuttings were starting to rot at the end base, and that there was some yellowing occurring. I didn't like this, and given that I had few or no replacements, I decided a bit of emergency salvage was in order. So I hacked up the cuttings into chunks, and coated the ends with corn starch. Being careful to remove as much bad tissue as I thought possible. Experimenting with yellowing being an issue or not with hylocereus, since I have no frame of reference. But I suspect it might be bad. So most of it went.

I am trying the desert cactus "leave them to dry in a shady spot" method for a few weeks to see if that encourages these chunks to root. I suspect some may be too small to root. But you never know. I'm not sure how the pieces with starch on both ends will respond.

But again, some of those were expensive, and difficult to immediately replace. So I figured if I could save them, let's give it a shot. At least one of the variety I have some spares for.

This blooms every three years, it appears, last in 2016.
