Nutrient Issue or mites?

Hi everyone,

Looking for some diagnostic help. Are these chilies mute deficient or suffering from broad Mites?

We have broad mites elsewhere in the garden and a big tree just dropped its leaves - this usually leads to a spike in broadmites. At the same time my wife gave birth prematurely so I had to leave my hydroponics in the hand of a friend and I came back to this. I changed the nutes out but know it will take time to recover. I'm figuring calcium deficiency. What do you think?

My worry is I wait for it to get better and it turns out to be mites and I lose time.

For the damaged tips do you think they will recover? Or is a good opportunity to chop back a plant?

Photos are from different plants in the same nute loop.

mites most likely. though admittedly i know little of the pests in sulawesi.

i dont suppose i could convince you to paint that metal roof? lol.

That doesn't look like any nut deficiency I have ever seen. Foliage looks melted, I would go with mites.
But just for the record, what were the nutrient values in your hydro when you returned?

The water was low and it was at around 1250 ppm.  Some tips have turned purple too.

I'll do a hot water treatment tomorrow and see what happens.

The way the larger leaves are folded, and curling downwards looks exactly like my mite ridden plants. I have been fighting the mites, and just when I think I have them at bay, I can see them damaging the new growth from the nodes. I hate mites so much right now. Good luck with yours. Natria kills them on impact (spider mites), you just have to spray the plant like every 3 days, or they come right back.

It might be more than one issue. Mites probably, but also looks like it is over fertilized. Or what Tank said, something looks overdone whatever that may be.

Sorry, but im 99 peecent sure you have mites of some species. I had tomato russet mites on my peppwr plants a couple years back. The tacoing of the larger leafs, defoliaton, bronzing of the plant. It sucks. Im so glad i moved to another location, because these bastards come back. I know abamectin and sulfur dust every three days will help control them.

Nuke them

looks like herbicidal damage or excessive use of oils or soaps.  Whatever the problem the plant is stressed, instead of treating for mites, wait and look for continuing damage.  Mites should be visible with a magnifying glass. My bet is herbicide.

What is the value of the water only, that you use? 1250 seems pretty high. My nutrent mixture runs about 850. My water is RO and 0 ppm.

Could be herbicide damage, but as the OP mentioned there are mites all over his garden which makes me believe theres a mite that is multi host specific slowly killing his peppers.

Op, inspect very closely with a microscope and verify if it could be mites,

No herbicides used here. No microscope either, I can get to 10x with my camera, would that be enough?

I think it's a combo of mites and the calcium deficiency leading to acidic pH. I've thrown out the nutes and put the plants in 42c water for 5 mins. New growth seems in good condition.

Aside from that, I got pissed off with the tree dropping mites so I decided to build a shade house in another area and I figured I'd give aquaponics a try.. 90m2 of grow space is almost ready, and then we have another 25m2 for the 10k litres of fish tanks. Not bad for a weeks work!

My RO gives me about 100. But our water is full of iron, pre treatment we run at about 5000ppm, the. We knock it down to about 1250 with calcium hypochlorite / settlement and filter.

Ooh, could be too much neem maybe? Although thinking about it I have seen this before in some of my plants before I had neem, and they were in soil so I may have just answered my own question... D'oh!

Wow!

Still having trouble.

PPm was hovering around 1000, they were transpiring out about 10l a day and that has now slowed down.  Roots are feeling slimy and brown and the leaves are dropping / necrotic spots.

I'll upload a pic from the ipad shortly but I think it's too many plants from a a small reservoir.  Worked well when they were small but they throw off the balance of the system far too quickly now they are large. It's only 40l and I knew this problem would come but was hoping i'd get my new project online first.  I'll switch this hydro rig to mint or something similar if I keep it.

New project should be online next week so I can hopefully recover the plants a bit in the aquaponics system as it cycles.

Thanks for everyones advice.

The plants turning purple is most likely from the iron in your water. I added some to all of my plants and all of the seedlings were purple a day later.
