The Del Rogue Stick Burner, Maiden Burn

This is my Big Poppa UDS modded to use charcoal, or straight wood splits.

Under the dome is a grill that swivels 360 degrees, although, this would never be necessary.

Grill exposed.  Wood is loaded through the top.  I thought of adding a door to the barrel side, but see now, that would be unnecessary.

Got oak?

Lump, about 1/3 full.

It is ON.  Smells like a campfire.  None of that smoldering charcoal odor.

Fire roasting some home grown Hatch, Big Jim, and heritage 6-4 chiles.

Blistering.  Temp was between 350-400F.  Smooth sailing.

Pork, beef tongue stuffed, roasted poblanos, again.

Burp...

"007" swivel grate mod was created by Fwismoker on the BBQ Brethren forum  All credit to him for getting me a prototype. Metal fab work by another brethren, dwfisk.  Apparently, plans will be available to anyone wanting to give this a go.  I'm selling nothing.  Just showing off a new bbq concept.  With a rotisserie, it's hard to beat, if you are partial to wood fires for cooking.  A cool concept, I think, that has a lot of unexplored possibilities.  Fwis cooked banana bread cupcakes on it yesterday.  I'm looking forward to a longer cook this upcoming weekend.

Edit: I forgot to mention all cooking was done with the dome-lid on. Just took it off for photos. Also, there is an expanded metal tray that attaches under the grill, and clears the top of the barrel. Can be used for side dishes. Once I get a roti in place, I'll have several cooking zones that can be used simultaneously.

Very cool! Those Rellenos look so friggen good. Well done!

Did you burn it once before you put food in it? It looks like there's paint/oils on it.

Sa-weet! How did you like the kit?
Well, it has a couple of advantages over some standard UDS builds that I've seen. With the intake vents that I have, it will get up to 275-300F in 10 minutes, easy. In fact, I'm shutting down all vents except a single hole before then. Most UDS cookers take longper. Having a charcoal basket that can be raised to a grilling position, is slick. I smoked a beef tongue with the basket in the lower position, raising the basket to grill some chicken after the tongue was finished. The kit had everything, even a step drill bit. I still have two more mods to complete it.

Awesome Jim! Nice to here someone else smokes beef tongue. Nice set up pal! Got me drooling! Cheers buddy!

Nicely done amigo... They use kiawe wood here alot
Looks like bradda from da islands! Kiawe wood is always nice for cooking especially if you doing an emu style cooking! I sure miss those days in Waimanalo and Big island. Hated have to get it though. Between da thorns and wearing out saws and your back. Still good wood though! Aloha bra!
