Meh....This brew is way overhyped and mediocre at best. I don't even detect maple. :(

Double Stack easily blows this one out of the water.
 
Aslin. Stripes. A 15% stout, and a damn good one too. The adjuncts work so well together. The 15% base beer Aslin uses for their stouts is top friggin notch. I can't wait til all of the barrel aged versions currently aging start coming out next stout season! This one REALLY hits that neopolitan note.

Backwoods bastard is one of those gems of a scottish ale that I actually really enjoy. I didn't get any this year either, but I agree that last year's release was definitely phenomenal.
 
This Quad is A+. I usually love dark Quads, but F it, this seriously brings the goods. About perfect in every single way for it's style.

10.7% ABV!??? Where? It drinks like a 4%er!

"The extremely rich and complex taste sensation and the stable beer head can also be found in the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple. The sweet caramel touches, however, are still reserved for the Gulden Draak.
The new recipe, on basis of 3 different kinds of malt added in a volume of 4 times the content in lager, provide the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple with a deep golden amber colour and a fruity scent. Together with the smooth and subtle sweet taste ensures this a wonderfully accomplished bouquet.
Just like the other specialty beers of Brewery Van Steenberge is the Gulden Draak 9000 Quadruple a beer of high fermentation with secondary fermentation. A wine yeast is used for the secondary fermentation, which also contributes to the grandiose taste."

it just goes to show how subjective tastes are. i can`t say anything about CBS because i`ve never had it but the first post at the top of this page member t0mato calls it mediocre. it can be meh to one person and delicious to another. just sayin :cheers:

I think what t0mato is referring to is that by taking the base beer (breakfast stout), and aging it in maple syrup bourbon barrels, that the brew is obviously better than the base beer (breakfast stout), but not up to snuff with his Great Notion's version of a similar style beer. Double stack costs much less, and tastes better. Double stack is also only available at their brewery in Oregon, and only for a super limited time (1-2 days max), before it sells out. CBS has a national/multinational distribution, and is produced in a much larger quantity.

Maple syrup bourbon barrel aged stouts for the masses will always command a much higher price, and a definite degradation in quality.

wish i could try that Double Stack.

Don't we all! Being in one very specific part of the country, and being at the right brewery, for just the right day of the year to grab cans, means that a select group of people in the know in Oregon, get to know the glory of Double Stacks.
Soon. ;)

This last batch was kind of a letdown versus others but it still pretty great. The cans I have right now are officially in their prime.

I've always heard those Great Notion stouts were pressure sensitive, and couldn't survive our pressure out here in the Mid Atlantic. What an amazing experiment it would be to attempt a coast to coast flight...IDK....it might work!
 
The best UVB variant I have tried so far. We stopped by a friend's place,and he shared this with me. I will get a pour picture after I hit the brewery to pick some up.

It smelled faintly like a strawberry shortcake ice cream bar, but the flavour hit was Dr Fowlers wild strawberry extract.
Saying it tasted like an old time digestion extract medicine might make it sound bad, but I loved the flavour of that stuff as a kid.
