The Smoking Gun handheld smoker

I was watching "Primal Grill with Steven Raichlen" on PBS today and he was using a handheld smoker on one of the segments. I looked it up and this seems to be the one he used.

Does anyone have any experience with this thing? It seems like it would be perfect for someone who doesn't have the money, space, or time to deal a real smoker (That is if it really works.).

I guess if it doesn't work as a smoker, it would make one hell of a pipe! :high:

This is not a replacement for a "real" smoker. There's no way you will get BBQ pulled pork or ribs with that thing. It is meant more for flavoring things like drinks, desserts or other ingredients like mashed potatoes or tortillas. It "coats" the food with a light smoke flavor is all it does. A smoker is used for actually cooking things, but that gun thing is just a flavor adderer. LOL

I have one, and second what Scovie said.

It's a little better than he's giving it credit for, if you capture it with meat in an oven bag, or if you use it in a whipping siphon to smoke cocktails or fruit or whatever ...

It has nothing to do with BBQ 'smokers' ... and won't, at all.

A Cameron stove-top smoker is kind of in the middle of the two, but still closer to the Smoking Gun than real Q.

This is the foo foo stuff Grant uses his for.

These are from his collection.
