chinense Habaneros at supermarket

Found these brown guys on the shelf this morning. What are they? Buy?

I'd buy the whole bunch! (except any that are soft or rotten) They look great!

Those are chocolate habaneros ('chocolate' as to color not flavor). They make great powder and sauces... I didn't care for them fresh as much as I do the orange or red ones. A lot of people do. Never ever have I seen those at a grocery store here, either a regular one or at the Mexican grocery I go to. I only see the traditional orange and the occasional red ones. (I always prefer the red's, so I grab them every time I see them)

And that price awesome! Orange habs average around $6 a pound here, with them being around 4-5 at the Mexican grocer (when in the peak of season they will lower to about $3.50). It doesn't look like anyone else is buying them, so I'd at least buy a handful and try them out to see if you like them!

Pound. I'll grab some tomorrow.

2ALL: how's a taste and heat level versus orange habaneros?

Noticeably hotter than the typical orange habs, the taste is different.  I struggle to describe the chocolates; I'm tempted to say they're more bitter, and i guess that's accurate b/c they are a little bitter, but I'm sure that someone with a better palate & vocabulary could describe it more accurately and eloquently.  It's one of those things that you either like or you don't, for the fresh pods.  Dried and powdered, they're far more popular...

Regular yellow/orange/red habaneros taste to me liek bell pepper, mango, and perfume.
I'll have to cut one in the store before buying them all :)

The choc habs have a pretty intense heat compared to the orange hab.  If I were to describe the taste I would say a strong green bell pepper type taste. Thats all I got.

I think tht sounds like a plan but at that price, you got little to lose.  If you don't dig on'm fresh, just powder them up.

Is the red one - ripe jalapeno?
Good for sauce making??

I think the off white one is a Hungarian Wax.  The red ones are definitely fresno.  Great job on the sauce you made, and great find!  When you sample it, let us know what you think.

The sauce smells sweet and spicy (fried carrot & onion aroma) with notes of vinegar.
The flavor is same, with a wave of heat catching up on the finish.

Comparing to my previous red/orange cooked habanero sauces it is hotter, and
less flavorful. I like usual habaneros better for the sauce making.

Thank you everyone for replies!
