Christmas Present Uh-Oh

The Darlin' Bride wanted to feed what she thinks is my obsession with capsaicin, so she bought me a hot sauce kit for Christmas. It came from an outfit called Man Crate and the hot pastes included were Habanero, Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and Carolina Reaper. Starting me off on the high end, I guess...

Anyway, upon opening the box, everything seemed neatly, tightly and gently packed, lots of shock-absorbing paper between the kit components. But as I grabbed booklets and bottles and the hand-pull processor box out to inspect, I noticed my fingers getting wet and slippery. Closer inspection showed a reddish stain on parts of the paper, inside of the box itself, and on the bottles of pepper paste. Looking at the bottles, I found the culprit.

At least it wasn't the bottle itself broken, but now I'm afraid to touch myself....ANYWHERE.

Needless to say I'll get in touch with the comp'ny and have a replacement sent, but everything in the box, even the rubber gloves they included were stained and wet.

I will have to go take a leak soon. I've washed my hands a half dozen times with Goop and with Dawn dish soap. Am I doomed?

Wash with lots of isopropyl alcohol, several times, and then another couple of times.

It is the only thing I have found that will actually remove capsaicin oils.

Huh, no isopropyl, but being a paint contractor I have gallons of denatured, and a much stronger dilution (100%?). It dries the skin quite a bit but that means it's cutting oils on the skin.

The oil in peppers is only soluble in alcohol.  No amount of soap will take it off.  So yes, any kind of alcohol is your friend when you've had an "incident".

I once had an "at work" incident after eating a bunch of green papaya and thai hot peppers.  I ended up buying a can of coke that I didn't drink.  Awkward.

Sucks about the leakage....
We may be posting that for different reasons once he's tried a few of these...

A tip from LDHS, get a cheap bottle of gin, keep it in freezer, use to wash cap off hands. Don't know if it works, he swears by it.
It's temporary relief, but it does work. Once the capsaicin has burned the skin, you've basically got a chemical burn, and it's gonna hurt.

But the gin is ice cold and a little bit slippery, and the alcohol will help to remove some of the capsaicin oils (oil = alcohol soluble)

Degreasers like lava soap are also very effective but for the cooling effect, cheap gin is great. Cold cream might also work?

Yup, got the Goop.

Folks, I washed my hands in everything I could think of but the Cascade. The truth is, I went from one soap to another solvent so fast I would've never been sure which one did the trick till the alchohol was brought up.

What does bother me is how that cap got the way it did. The safety wrap is still tight, does capsaicin develop pressure in a sealed container to blow the top? Never heard of it....

Only if improperly sealed / or improperly filled or processed. In this case it probably banged against something and broke. They're a pretty established brand so I'm betting the latter.

I agree with Scott. From the picture, you can see the cap is broken. Something took a hit. That product won't "go bad and explode".

Wow, color me impressed. Here is the text of the email I just received from Stacia @ Man Crate:

Hi Eric,
Well I would certainly not advise you to clean the other items and risk using them... I have a fear of rubbing my eyes after making salsa when I was young. So if you wanna take the risk then bygolly(if that's how you even spell that) that is up to you. I went ahead and sent you out a whole crate replacement. I had it sent express saver so it hurries and gets there so the hot sauce making can begin!!! If you have any questions regarding your order please reference order 829084. Please please be careful with the contents in that original crate! I would much rather just shoot ya over a new one then somethin happen.
Cheers,
Stacia
