Joyner's 2017 New Year's Day cook

So trying to keep a few traditions alive that I grew up on as did my parents and theirs and so on....

Of course my spin or take on many of the dishes usually involves heat of some type.

Black eyed peas soaked over night with a ham hock in the water

Happy New Year!

Feel free to post your New Year Day traditional foods here

We dont really have any traditional meal for New Years Day but we are having.....

HUGE Ribeyes
Baked Russet potatoes with sour cream, chives, bacon bits and a wide choice of cheeses....still undecided which cheese i want....Really tempted to try the Stilton on a baked tater
Sauteed shiitake and oyster mushrooms
Crusty French bread with fresh garlic butter

Undecided on veggie. Maybe roasted Brussel sprouts.

Blackberry and Raspberry (razzleberry) pie served with vanilla bean ice cream

It's cool the meaning behind the traditional New Years foods.

Pork because hogs can't look backwards. "No looking back".
Collards because it represents paper money. Germans eat cabbage or sauerkraut for the same reason.
Beans or black eyed peas represent coin money.
Rice represents health.

Of course there are a million variations and many more but we all seem to eat very similarly around the new year.

So, I'd never heard of this tradition until a few weeks ago when people were suggesting a TD them ...

... and I haven't eaten it, ever ...

I like the final presentation colors a lot, and typically like anything if ham involved ...
.

I'm pretty much culturally moronic, too, though ...

#CulturedEyeForTheScienceGuy and all.

I would destroy those beans and greens!!!!!

I never cared much for either until an older black lady at a employee only airport cafeteria made some. They never served either at the passenger cafeteria. It was some of the best cheap chow ive ever eaten.

True story, southern staple and I am very lucky to have had generations of info passed down.
