OCD 2017!!!

Well it's 2017. Finally! Last year was a success, as far as the ground plants were concerned. Virgin, clay ground. My Chinese got smacked by hail twice! No room for error with those. Out of 12 plants I got ONE BBG. First and only. That variety is cursed. Tried for the past 3 years and some sort of calimity happens.

This year I decided to try 21+ different varieties of the BBG. I have 9 Reaper crosses. 21 and counting other varieties. I built a hoophouse and some COB led's. Planning on getting them outside in March sometime. That might be a delusion, beings I'm in Colorado. We shall see. There is only a few varieties that I've grown before. The rest are all new. I'm planning on isolating most of them.

Just started some Lemon Drops for Throwdown Growdown. I will wait a couple weeks before I start the others. Everything needs to be in order before I germinate. No turning back at that point. I want two plants from most varieties. Plants need to be woody by ground day. That's the only way I have a chance at success with late maturity varieties. If I have extras, I'll give away to my friends of THP.

That's good to hear. I wish, I was in the predicament of top or know top. I started early but plants are not where I want them. Overall they are healthy, just not as tall as I would like. They will stay in the shed as long as it takes. Hopefully when they need to be potted up, they'll be tall enough to the ground.

One has to grow the maters! The Celebrity is a great tom, but prone to "catface", I grew many varieties over the years, 35 years now. I now only grow Early Girl, they take the heat and the cool weather in stride and always produce nice baseball size, super tasty fruit. We swear by them.

Early girl ya say. I'll give them a try. Sounds like it will work for me. The celebrities did fantastic last year. The romas, not so much. I'll try the early girls. I don't have enough room or time to start them. I'm going to have to pick them up from the nursery.

I have some really cool varieties going. Excited to grow Scotch Brains (Justin), MOA, UFO SB7J from pod of Justins and two selected Caribbean Red phenos from last years garden. I love the super hots, but can't forget ones roots. Oh, I'm also growing the Foodarama (Yellow) from a pod of Justin's. I'm excited!

I've got some "New Girl" tomatoes started for my Mom. They're supposed to be an improved strain of Early Girls. So far, the Roma strain that seems to do the best for me is Speckled Roman. Blossom end rot has been a problem for me. I think it's mostly due to not enough water and humus, and maybe a little due to soil compaction. I'll be putting down as much compost with added biochar as the raised beds will hold, loosening up the soil with a broadfork. I also think I'll skip the plastic mulch with the Tomatoes this year and put down lots of organic mulch instead to conserve water.

We've had great luck with the Early Girl variety here.
Oregon Spring is a good one, too.  Macedonian is one of my
favorite heirloom varieties (seed originally from Penny).
 
Well the plants seem to be holding there own. I raised the lights. I think the ones right under them didn't look to great.

I'm diggin' the purple ones, as well. They've had such a deep color their entire lives. I can't seem to get my purple varieties to develop that color with just a CFL. I'm sure your growing techniques are better, also. All of your plants look terrific! What are the purple varieties, anyway? Lookin' great!

The plants have been under cfl up until a couple weeks ago. I believe the varieties of the purple plants are Redgum Tiger Mamp

Oh wow! Those must all be new/newer...I haven't heard of some of those. I thought they were all one variety (I didn't mean for you to write out so many strains). I guess my PDN is a darker purple, but my Pimenta Leopard and CGN 21500 are green-leafed, purple-stemmed. Great job with your CFL's! I can't wait to see some of those varieties fruit!
 
What a stunning line up of very healthy plants Chuck, they will soon stretch out now you have raised the CFL, they look nice solid squat plants, the purple foliage seedlings really stand out and looking nicely established.

From what I've read is the BER is from the plant not utilizing the calcium due to some type of lockout. As soon as they flower hit them 2 times a week in the AM with a Calmag application. 1tsp per gallon. I use a watering can and just soak the leaves. This put me to just having a few out of 80 plants last year. Without doing this I lose 50-60%. Adding it to a watering routine have little effect.
 
Let us know how the New Girl's do.

I think I'm up to 74 varieties and 188 plants. I'll see how many I actually plant. 80 plants for sure in the ground and raised beds. Maybe another 20 or so in containers. The rest? Don't know yet. I keep extras just in case.
