Top non barrel aged stout list in Paste Mag

I don't think there’s one Texas brewer on that list. Three Leg Lab needs to be on there somewhere lol. It's still the Wild West for beer here in Texas, anything goes. But really we have some German styles beers that are world-class

 I like what I hear

"15. Evil Twin Brewing Soft DK
City: Brooklyn, NY
ABV: 10.4%
The verdict: Evil Twin’s Even More Jesus gets more mentions, but in this tasting we ended up gravitating toward the vanilla-infused Soft DK instead. Unlike many stouts making use of vanilla bean, it’s pleasantly reserved in how it presents that flavor; subtly rather than trumpeting it to the heavens. The roast here has an almost woody or oaky quality, which intermingles with an undercurrent of dark fruitiness to produce something that is slightly vinous and unusual. Other tasting sheets praise the soft mouthfeel of the stout, but it seems like this is one where each taster was picking up significantly different elements, while still enjoying the beer for disparate reasons. Regardless, it works for us."

I generally pick up a growler of the Bomb! any time it's on tap.  Sometimes the chile notes really come out well in that one.  Bell's Expedition Stout I had again recently and it still strikes me as pretty much exactly where it landed on their list.  Good, not great.  Evil Twin's "Soft Dookie" is good, but that shouldn't surprise anyone.  Darkness is a no-brainer.  What's weird to me is that I've had the River North offering they raved over but it obviously didn't make as much of an impression on me as it did them.  That's the first I've even thought of it since that time.  I DO immediately recall the coffee stout of theirs he was talking about.  I like coffee overtones, but that was like "Not Your Grandfather's Coffee" when I drank it.  If it hasn't changed since that time, no wonder half their staff hated it.

I really wonder if they tasted the coffee version first, then tasted what the coffee version should have been later and said "oh, this is amazing".  Everything else I listed above, I make a point to pick up on occasion.  I've never even looked at the River North stuff since I had it in CO.  Weird.  Perhaps I need to give it another shot.

(Hey Grass Snake...the TX brewers may be absent because it looks like the editors just invited people to send them free beer for review.  Try to imagine Texas folks giving a crap what people at a clickbait e-zine think about their beer.  LOL!)
