Peter S - 2017 grow

Here's my grow so far for this year. I started these early January. The large peppers in the basement are over winters. I'm trying to get my grow down, to around half (or a little more) than last year. I'm hoping this will be more manageable and less wasted peppers :) My grow methods this year will be Kratky (fill and forget and static nutrient level systems), self watering containers (diy earthboxes), and grow bags with potting mix on drip system fed with Master Blend. Also will continue to run some indoor hydro using DWC and sprayaponic methods. All my peppers will be fed with mix of MasterBlend, Magnesium Sulfate and Calcium Nitrate.

Here're my overwinters, hard to distinguish from this angle, but the back left is Jamaican Hot Chocolate, back right is Yellow Chiltepin, front left is Thai Dragon and right is Tien Tsin.

Peppers in AeroGarden Bounty. Back center is D3's Aji Painapple f2, front right is Yellow Dystopia, back left is Sugar Rush Peach and in front of that a 7-Pot Primo. Of all my AeroGarden peppers, the Painapple will stay in the bounty, and everything else will be transplanted to something else.

In the foreground here on right is Brazilian Red Olive, and beside it is a Reaper x Moruga f3. AeroGarden has a Cereja da Amapa, Andy's King BOC, Chocolate Unreaper, Aji Charapita and 7-Pot Chaguanas Yellow.

Hello Peter, since you have experience growing inside and outside with a wide variety of techniques, i'd like to ask, do you think an airstone/DWC type setup for outdoors is necessary? I'd like to grow kratky in 5-gal buckets, and I was wondering if this could be successful without pumping in air and keeping it simple.

The beauty of Kratky method is it doesn't require air stones, pumps, electricity, etc... As the plant draws the solution down, the roots hanging above the water do the air exchange and get oxygen. The roots in the solution do all the feeding. Peppers do really well using this method. If you want true fill and forget, you'll need a fairly large reservoir, like 50 - 100 gallon. Last year I transferred a BBM that had been in a DWC setup indoors to an outdoor kratky setup in a 45 gallon trashcan. It was originally in a 5 gallon bucket, so I took another 5 gallon bucket and drilled a bunch of holes in it, basically making it a large net pot. I transferred the plant to it, and that to the lid of the trashcan. The plant drank all of the solution before the season ended. I also grew a fairly large JPGS in a 32 gallon trash can. I had to add solution to that to keep it going, as it drank all of it fairly quickly. Matt Garver has a nice design using a large reservoir attached to a controller bucket which has a float valve installed at the height you want to maintain your solution level. The controller bucket is attached one or more growing containers, which can also be 5 gallon buckets. I'm thinking about building one of those this season.

I haven't tried using DWC outdoors, but I've read mixed results from others who've tried it. They suspected heat being an issue, but my Kratky plants did fine in the sun.

Everything looks great as usual, the clones are doing well. Off to a good start, so much further along than I am.
Thanks D3! Going to keep that first Painapple in the AG solo after everything else is moved out. That'll have all iso pods. If the clones take I'm going to put them outside in some larger setups, hopefully grow monster plants. If it's anything like the f1 I'll be packing my freezer full. I loved how the f1 tasted.

I still have a bag full, been meaning to make a sauce or ferment from them. After having fireland foods lemon drop sauce I guess baccatums sauces aren't so bad. it was just salt, vinegar and peppers.

Not sure if i'll try to ferment them or just go straight into a sauce. I don't have any cultures to start a ferment.
