seed-train Register now for the 2017 "seed train" already in progress

The seed train has returned, chock full.

It will be stored in a cool dry closet till we start up again in the fall. Thanks go out to everyone who participated and kept this going without any problems at all.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone started seeds they received from the seed train? If so how has your germination rate been? I'm only asking because another member is having some difficulty. I am not sure of his technique or experience level.

I haven't, but It's never too early to start a couple for next year. I'll test a couple of seeds today.

Did they specify any particular varieties and/or who they were from?

If you end up getting that, I can do a test if I took any from the train.
I did ask but he was more interested in telling me how much the seeds suck and how we all should be taught how to properly collect and store seeds.

If he would like to chime in, he is more than welcome to do so. I on the other hand do not appreciate being scolded over something I have no control over.

Anywho...

Moving forward I'd like to take a poll regarding the next seed train. (There's no right or wrong answer.)

With the current load, the next seed train would inevitably need to be moved up to a medium flat rate box, and with that comes increased postage costs (something around $13 or so)

...or the content can be split and sent 2 directions at once while retaining the lower postage rate associated with the flat rate bubble mailer ($7.20).

Which would you prefer?

Yeah, split sounds good.

Would one start at the beginning and one at the end of the list, or what?
We haven't really thought that far ahead yet. It's very doable though. You can sign up for one or both trains, and we can mix up the order a bit.

Another thing that has been suggested was to arrange the order by distance, so that the leap from stop to stop will be slightly quicker.

I germinated many with no heat other than the high tunnel.  Did not record which seeds came from this train and which came from other sources.  But noticed none of the trays lagging behind.  In fact, I was rather surprised at how many did germinate.  Usually, I germinate indoors with heat.

You could just do one train and have half start at the bottom and half start at the top.  They won't move at the same speeds, so it is doubtful they would hit the middle person at the same time.

Seems like throwing them in a medium box would be the easiest way for you to track the things progress.  If you split, you will have twice the work & the money is probably about the same since you got twice the times paying postage.  Still, if you dont mind the extra work I think the excitement would be better if it was top down and bottom up.

That's definitely an option.
