Jubnat's 2017 grow log

So, this is really my first year focusing just on growing peppers. And I figured I'd push it a little over the limit...you know, just so I can see where my limit really is.
This is also my first time starting seeds indoors, so I'm figuring out all the problems that go along with that. I bought a couple cheap LEDs from Amazon. They seem to be working out alright, not ideal, but not bad.

I'll be planting most of these in the ground(hopefully), in a couple of different garden beds. And whatever doesn't fit will be going in pots, and I'm trying out a few of those fabric pots for the first time. I might build a little raised bed if I get time in the next couple of weeks.

Anyway...this is the first round that was started on 1/15/17. Some came up in a week or so, some took a month, and a few never germinated at all.

And then I started another round on 2/25/17 to plant at work or give to friends.

And then there are other seeds that I didn't have room for, so I gave them to friends. So hopefully I'll be able to get some pods from them and see how their plants do for future grows.

So...I'm pretty f**king excited with my new obsession!

And I can't say enough about the generosity of everyone here. From buying fresh pods and seeds, to participating in my first seed train, to being gifted seeds out of the blue, it's been pretty awesome so far!

Oh, and I'll get some pics up here sometime soon. Hopefully when they're moving outside...just waiting for this crazy weather to settle down.

Wow. Nice list. I started my aji amarillos in December, and being in zone 3 wasn't all that prepared for what I got myself into. I do envy you suth'nas your growing season, it's difficult accepting a "dirt day" in March for an icicle clad tundra dog like myself. Maybe a little global warming will help... :fireball:

Here's to the best season all year! :drunk:

Thanks guys!

And yeah, I guess I'm a bit spoiled being down in zone 9. I can't really even be that mad when we got our first freeze in 23 months this winter. And it was only a couple of nights like that.

But man, when it's Christmas Day and you're wearing shorts and t-shirt to the family get together...you start to wish you lived somewhere a little more north.

No, no you don't. Y'all come visit, but most folks who live here are FROM here, for good reason.

I was told when I moved to Phoenix that if I could survive a summer there I could live there year round. I lived there for 12 years. I left because there is virtually no change of season. They had orange blosson allergy season, palo verde allergy season, the monsoon, but very little in the way the north changes. I was raised up here. I wouldn't curse anyone with living here. But visit? Absolutely!! You'll love it here as long as you know you can go back home!!

I'm originally from Southern California and I agree with you. Although the weather out there is fantastic, it never changes. I do enjoy the change of the seasons in the north.

Great list, Jub! If you haven't tried an SB7J yet, they're excellent! I hope all goes well for you.

Thanks, man.
I haven't tried the SB7J yet. It originally wasn't really on my radar...but I got it as a freebie in an order from my White Hot Peppers. And once I read up on it, I had to grow it. Still just a seedling, but it seems to be growing more vigorously than others.

And you may not have gotten season changes out in California, but we seem to get a few dozen down in south Louisiana!
Our winter is really just a few clusters of cold days scattered in what feels like summer or fall. It can never seem to make up its mind down here....at least until summer. :hot:

Here's a couple of low quality pics of the seedlings...
Just waiting for a few more to pop. Anyone else have trouble germinating Aji Fantasy White?

Started to harden them off a few days ago, hopefully the weather will stay calm for a little while.

I've heard about the hailstorms you can have down there.
I'm surprised there are survivors!

Man, we really don't get them often where I'm at. When it hails during the summer, it's usually a quick passing thing. And they're small enough that by the time they hit the ground, they're melted.

But this one didn't let up, and the rain just did not stop. It's crazy to see half of your yard flood in a matter of minutes.

I was stuck at work when it happened, but luckily my wife is starting to understand how much my various obsessions mean to me. She fucking saved me! Moved all the potted plants under cover, covered most of the ones in the garden with whatever the hell was laying around. She lost a couple of flip flops running through the shady side of the backyard, that probably already had 6-8 inches of water.

Very fortunate!

Cool pics.Plants look good despite the hail attack.I love the figs.
Thanks, and they're looking even better now, the ones in the garden are starting to get their footing. I'm finally off work tomorrow, I'll try to get some pics up.

And yes, the figs...I think the one in that album is my new Negronne fig(also called Violette de Bourdeau by some). This is its second year in the ground. I probably got a dozen last year, just a few months after I plantet it...and they were the sweetest tastiest figs I've had. They almost seemed to have the sweetness of a dried fig, when they were fresh. Really looking forward to it.

I also have a few Celestes(and improved Celeste- O'Rourke), they are one of the standards down here. Also, a green ichia in a big container(I don't know about this one though, only got a couple ripe last year, they stayed green forever, like I thought they were supposed to, and then in about one day, they doubled in size, and turned purple. Huge! Like in between a golf ball and a tennis ball.). And then I have one unknown, along with my Celeste, it came from cuttings from the old university farm. Seems like a miniature Celeste, in growth habit and fruit.

Anyway...enough about figs...

Got most of the in ground plants staked down today. Some of them are looking great, growing really bushy, putting out buds already.

Here's some of the ones in pots, taken about a week ago
