Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

Nice plants Devv...mine have stalled on new growth.

Need to get them outside in the bed but I am still 3 weeks from plantout.
That's a real bummer. I'm also at least three weeks away from plant out...probably more...but mine are not as big or as beautiful as your plants are. Do you think they're getting too big for their britches and that's why they're stalling?

I transplanted from 4" pots to 1 gallon nc nursery pots 3 weeks ago.

They started to flower so I expect they should go into regrow mode soon.

I'm pretty sure it's just timing....they want to pod up.

Not a big concern....once they get into the raised beds they will explode with new growth.

I started to early again this year is all.

Venti for reference....

Btw, I don't think there's a need to categorize as white or purple anymore. These are purple and mature to white. Paul saved seeds from immature purple pods that were around at the end of the season. Labelling purple and white was just too keep tabs on germ rates i.e. do immature pods have viable seeds. The seeds whether white or purple should grow the same plant, generally.

Wow! That's a biggin', Ryan. That's very interesting. I don't know the whole "white vs purple" story but I started my purple later than the white. My white is more "squat" and darker while the purple is lankier. The purple has since caught up with the white, but the white is sturdier. Here are my lil guys.

White on left, purple on right.

I'm not disagreeing with you, Ryan. I just notice that my two are different. I'll have to read the origin story.

I'm seeing a very similar growth habit on both plants with differences in the pods. The "whites" look more like a typical PDN, and are turning lighter. The "purples" are more Bonda looking and holding on to the color. I'll put somepics up this weekend when I can get in the garden. Got 2.7 on the rain gauge today..

Hardening off continues. Plucked a few lower leaves to promote branching.

Not quite ready for plant out but soon.

There are 3 whites and 3 purples.
All getting same soil ferts lighting and sun.

Not a lot of variant on size or plant shapes...color looks pretty even for each strain.

Thanks ;)

I'm going to let the first couple get nice and soft, but not overly ripe, for seeds.
Good idea thinking of saving from those early pods, Scott. I'm guessing not as many flowers on other plants were open when those pods set. Better chance of getting pure seed. Nice poddage, too! I wonder how light the purple variety will get. Great job!

Here is my lone plant. Potted up about a week ago. seems healthy but hasn't started growing again yet. I assume its still getting its feet under it.
Dark Dark Dark...I hope the plant keeps this color once it gets outside.
The summer sun will darken the plants nicely. I suspect yours will
hold that nice dark color no problem!

The purple seed pods came from a different plant than the white seed pods.
The former plant lagged about two weeks behind the latter at each stage of growth.
The pods had slightly different phenotypes as Scott noted. The purples more blunt
in general, and the whites more pointed. Of course there were exceptions in both cases.
My aim is to get large, pointy white pods, but the purple pheno is interesting, so I kept the two
separate. Well see what we see!

I noted the same difference in my plants last season - maybe it is significant, maybe not.
If I remember correctly, the purple plants started to put out branches earlier than
the white plants in January this season. I am not sure what the difference is now.
I will get a look at them in another five or six weeks!

I've been following the Pimenta De Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques thread for a while now. This is really a beautiful variety that I would love to grow myself some day! :)
I will send you some seeds when I get back in late June. Keep in touch til then.
Thanks for the interest in Tristens cross.

My earliest purple pod looks to be lightening up. So they should all go white if they stay on course?
That would be my guess, Scott. I think the main difference is the pod shape, but that could be an anomoly, I suppose my short grow season could have had something to do with the purple pods - it would have been nice to let them go another couple of weeks last season to see if they turned white. It will be interesting to see the results this year with all the people growing the cross.

Hoping to hear from Tristen one of these days to see how his are turning out.
