Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

Killer looking pods!

Thanks, Tristan. The hot sunny weather since late June
has been very kind to the chili plants.  Even in the 95-100
heat, they have kept on flowering and setting pods. Very
sun tolerant  variety that Tristen has produced!

Yes I have noticed that too as far as the heat tolerance, as it has been super hot all summer here too and even when others are showing stress the PDN are running STRONG! One would think with the darker color from the anthocyans and pigments it would run higher leaf Temps but... I guess nature knows best! Bear with the pic it's nighttime and they're sleeping plus pitch black+flash

Strong looking plants. indeed, Tristan. They look like they are
developing that rangy, branching growth habit I've seen here.

Flowering and pod-setting in the 90-100F summer weather:

Getting close to a decent harvest on the F4-2 and F4-3 plants.
Some really gorgeous, creamy looking pods coming along:

Looking good Paul!

I'm about 3-4 weeks before a gradual cool down here. We got 3"s of rain last night, out of nowhere. Should help the gals!
A couple of cool days here, too, Scott. mid-70s.
Our rain amounted to 0.02"
The grass will green up a little.

Back to the 90's tomorrow

Gettin' there with the purple version.

Got a couple ripe on the white version.

Ok....I was under the impression that these would be around Habanero-heat range. That's what I told a friend. This was way hotter. He ate half the pepper and his face is still in my driveway. Lol

Intense super-hot smell. I didn't try any. But you can tell it's hot. He said it was a great citrusy flavor!

Good to know... my plants are close to 4' tall, and the 2.5" pods haven't set as thickly as my other Chinense varieties. The yellows should start to ripen sometime next week, and the purples not long after. I was gonna ask what color they were when they ripened, but you posted before I could ask. Thanks Paul. Some beasty pods there, my friend!  Way to go, Adam!
Looking really good - those have to be 2.5" or batter.

As for heat, the late season pods are way hotter than
the early season pods, especially with the heat we
have been growing in this season. I also found the
flavor pleasant, at least for a hot pepper.
The heat can get ya, though  :mouthonfire:
 "face still in the driveway". That's funny!

Thanks for the update, bro.

We had a bit of a heat wave this past week, and a lot of my Chinense chiles experienced a ripening spurt. Picked my first yellow PDN x Bonda yesterday and had half of the pod on an egg 'n cheez sandwich. Nice citrus-y flavor and decent heat... Thanks for passing the seeds on Paul, I think they'll be a fine addition to this year's powder blend. Cheers!

P.S. I went out and took a closer look at the pods after making my initial post, and found a few ripe purple-pheno pods after all. Better and better... [emoji16]

- My pleasure, Scott - it is a privilege to help spread Tristens awesome cross -

Great looking pods, Rick. The purple variety is hard to judge ripeness, for me.
I usually squeeze a pod to see if it is starting to soften, then harvest all the pods
that look like that one. My purple has a few big, fat pods on it. Will be interesting
to see if it lags two weeks behind the white variety in ripening as it did last season.

Thanks for the update, my friend.

Hahaha, me too, brother Scott

Getting closer and closer to a decent harvest on the F4-2 and F4-3.
Am having a hard time being patient and making sure they are ripe.
When a few start to soften, I will pull some:

The F-6 pods look to be a couple of weeks behind the F-4 in ripening. Just
a few ivory pods on them:

Good luck to everyone participating in the project as harvest season gets closer.
We would appreciate very much any comments about growth habit, productivity,
Flavor, and of course heat

I really need to put the white in the 15 gal bag....

Those plants should really like the coming cooler temperatures,
Scott. They look great considering the heat there - thank the
gods for shade cloth!

Good luck wrestling the white into a 15 gallon bag!

Thanks Paul,

Come September 30th they will completely different ;)

I can't wait to see that, Scott!

It looks like the rangy growth habit is a stabilized trait
at this point. And the ability to tolerate heat and
sun. Rick's pods look very consistent with what I
have grown.

I think we may be close to saying this is a stable cross.
I am looking forward to what the other growers will have
to show/say as the harvests come in. Maybe a couple of
more generations, just to be sure  :D

I let my plants suffer through a drought last month so I think that caused some runty pods on a lot of my plants. Still a decent haul. I think k the whites came from 2 plants and the purple from 1.

Hey, Andy, looks like there are some great pods in that pile!
Have you tried sampling one yet? There will always be a few
runts, so not to worry...
