Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

_DSC1215a_zps824b6b30.jpg

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

Thanks for checking in, Tristan. They should produce great seed,
I think.

There are some even larger/longer pods still on the bush.  Some
are starting to enter the violet/purple transition stage, so my hopes
are high they will ripen up.

You think both phenos turn white/ivory after purple with long enough time?

That's a good question. I hope some grower somewhere has a long
enough grow season to test it.  So far, some of the pods on the F6W
plants look like the pods from last years F5P It may be the color is
trending towards a more violet ripe stage.  We have to wait and see
what the rest of the growers are getting, and how the white and
purple varieties turn out.

That being said, I am loving the color and pod variations I am seeing
across the seven plants. looks like 10 days of decent growing weather
here in the forecast, barring changes, of course.

:fireball: Can't wait to see the rest of the growers' big late-season pods  :drooling:

Found some nice pods on the F6W-LP today.
Top pod, 3 1/4 inches long, bottom pods, 3 inches long:

Well I still got 2months of good temps so I will rock em out as long as possible and let u know.. Love the taste already though of the purples!! Some weird hybrid of smelling dangerous like Chinese, with half the heat, and lots of floral notes!

Just for reference, here are some of last season's F5 pods, harvested mid-October:

Also, here are the pods the F6W(LP) came from on 10/19.
They are so similar to the big pods above.

The last two pods on the F5-1 are hanging on; still nice and firm with great color:

Big pods on the F5P at the end of the season (10/19).
This season, I'll pick them earlier now that I am sure
the violet pods are ripe and have viable seed.
Many of the purple seeds for this season's grow
came from these pods.

Getting so very close; some awesome phenotypes left to ripen up:

This year's F6W(LP) and F6P are living up to their parents with
pods like these on both plants, although I'd say the general
trend is to bigger pods each season, in my own grow. I hope
you all continue growing out your best pods so we can see
how the cross is developing.  This year has been very helpful.

Side thought: Tristen must be gearing up his grow down in
New Zealand at this time. If you are out there buddy, give
a shout out! Like to know your thoughts about how this is
turning out!

Found a few nice pods on the F6W-1 today. Some are
ivory colored on one side, violet on the other, others more
patchy, depending on sun exposure. Length ranges from
2 1/8 to 3 inches. Width from 5/8 to 7/8 inches. All good
seed pods:

This pod had the most amazing violet color all over:

I'm still a little behind most of y'all, but I'm starting to get some pods.

I easily have at least two months in my season.  Since they're in pots/bags, I can move them inside if we get a surprise early freeze.

These seem to be ripening to the purple coloration, but I'll let them ripen up a bit more to see if they're still ripening to a different color.

Alright, DP! I see ripe pods in your near future!

Your plants have a long time to develop some
nice pods! I hope they bust out all over for you! As for picking,
if they are starting to soften, I pick them, regardless of the
color. Most times, the seeds are ripe.  If it is a good seed pod,
I let it ride a little so the seeds are surely mature.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they grow out for you.
PM me your addy and I'll send you some F7 seeds when
the end of the season arrives.

Good luck going forward, Mitch. Thanks for posting in
this thread.

I lost my Purple, over the last 3 weeks 21.5"s of rain here. Pretty much unheard of for this time of year. The pot was too heavy to lift, I should have used my head and capped off the container. But, this has never happened before!

Hoping the white can pull off some pods before it gets too cold. Really bummed at the moment. Fall is supposed to be the killer part of the year here..

Looks like I have lots of reading to do in this glog. I haven't been here in a while, apparently, because I see lots of beautiful pods in here!

My Purple is doing much better than the White, even though the White has a lot of late ones. Here's one side of the Purple. I've since had to stake that branch up.
SbpQmRY.jpg

I pulled my isolated pod from my Purple today. It's been looking the same for a couple weeks. So I guess it's time.

I have a cold, so I can't smell a thing. I'm guessing the room has been aromatized. It sure is a pretty pod. (With and without flash.)
NyVUd04.jpg

I ended up counting 51 isolated Purple F7 seeds from this pod.

Do you want some, Paul?

Maybe I'll have a giveaway later on after my current one is officially over. Both White and Purple isolated seeds. Either way, I could send some to you, Paul.

Sorry to hear that, Scott. I guess the weather is just
getting unpredictable theses days. I hope your white
Pulls through for you in the end.

-Really awesome poddage, Adam. I can see why you had to stake the branch!

-Id love to have a few of those, my friend. Thanks for the offer,

The F4 plants have a definite lime green phase
between the purple and white phases:

Small harvest - interesting that all the F4 are ivory,
but only one of the four F6 truly has white pods:

It looks to me like the ivory and purple varieties are
different strains. The fact that the F4 are all ivory makes
me think maybe the later generations are expressing more
of the PDN traits. Will be interesting to see if the F4 leads
to violet pods in future generations, as well, and to see how
the F7 pods turn out.

Definitely noticed the lime green myself in between the purple to white.. Also noticed during cooking the purple goes away and fades.. Maybe the anthocyans oxidizing? What did you think of the flavor white vs purple? I'm still waiting til last minute to do full habrst as still have plant growing and plenty pods forming due to me getting in on em so late from USPS seedling mid season, but they're a hell of a grower! They stand tall as tomato and okra and peek above all my other pepper plants in the garden and they got a way late start!
Got me some nice whites last night I roasted up last night and they smell, taste much different than the purple shade! Much more deceptive sweet smell-almost diminished smell and much sweeter flavor but pretty darn hot after it deceives ya like 50sec later! Something else!

Looks great man! Yeah I hear ya on having to read to catch up on the GLOG as well! Have you done any cooking with them or dehydrating? Wonder how the color holds up in dehydrator..
