I don't think they are usually labeled the way you describe, as there would be no way of knowing, just from the labeling, if F1 seeds were the original cross, or if they were seeds from an F1 plant.

I always thought it was the other way around. I thought the seeds in a pod were a generation ahead of the pod itself.

If you cross a stable Jalapeño (Father) with a stable Cayenne (Mother), the Cayenne peppers that crow on the mother plant will look the same as the Cayenne peppers it always grows, but the seeds inside will be sold as "Hybrid F1 Cayepeño" seeds.

If you grow out these "Hybrid F1 Cayepeño" seeds, you'll get a pretty consistent hybrid F1 pepper (as long as both the father and mother are stable), but the seeds inside are now F2, and will not grow true.

Anyhow, that's what I've thought.

The initial crossed pod produces F1 seeds. F1 seeds produce F1 plants (which makes sense because a seed is basically a baby plant). F1 plants produce pods with F2 seeds. So the seeds you harvest are one generation ahead of the parent plant.

When you buy F1 strawberry seeds from a breeder, you're not gonna get a bunch of variation. Which you would get if F1 seeds produced F2 plants (like in Paul's theory).

Maybe Tristen will drop by and clarify for us.
My assumption is that the F1 is the first generation
of pods/seeds produced by the original cross's seeds
as Bernd stated above.

In 2014, I planted his F1 and F2 seeds, and in
2015 the seeds from the pods produced by the
F2 seed plant, which I called F3, and so on each
season harvesting the new generation's pods:
2015 - F3, 3rd generation of pods/seeds
2016 - F4, 4th generation of pods "
2017 - F5, 5th generation of pods "
2018 - F6, 6th generation of pods "
2019 - F7 pods, whose seeds will produce the
eighth generation in 2020.

So, that was my thinking, for whatever it's worth :think:

Now as we grow out the 7th generation, we can finally
name it, and thenumber won't matter so much

I suppose there is rule or norm for this nomenclature,
probably available online.

Man you're a trooper! No break for you huh?! Already back breaking bread popping some more seeds huh?! I'm taking a quick breather to get everything in order, cleaned up as far as the grow room, and all the supplies, and also trying to do more on the processing/kitchen/creations part of the pepper game for the short interim in not growing anything

not sure when I'll pop some beans-maybe February? Can't remember when I started popping em last year..

Thanks, Tristan. Sounds like you are the one that's busy though!

I hope you have good luck with the PdN x BMJ. My germination
rates have been very poor. I started about 50 seeds in various media
to get 5 plants of the F7, and 12 F5 to get two plants.

I just bought an AeroGarden Classic to play with.

Do you do anything special to keep it warm?

I'm still playing around with my AeroGarden, but it seems like it'll be running cooler than my stand-by method of a heating mat with humidity domes.

The pods were totally white and starting to get soft,
so I think they were ripe. Normally I have had good
germ results but sometimes there are some that do
not do that great. I have used seedling mix and jiffy
pellets, but for my 2019 grow, I am going to try some
rock wool cubes. I use a germinating heat mat as well.

Update Dec 18:
Red Rocoto and Aji Amarillo seeds, 88%
started in AeroGarden, so think that part of
system in good order.

I keep it inside in our office room with the lights on for extra warmth.
I have the old style with flouro tubes, and it works great. Sprouted 3/4
Red Rocoto and 4/4 Aji Amarillo seeds in the past couple of weeks.
Having lights on 24/7 keeps the deck warm enough for germinating.

I’ve got both in the propagator but the violet where first to show, I’ve not done anything to the seeds just put them in rock wool i normally soak seeds but this year I’m trying not to, germination was 3 out of 3 so far.

Can't wait to see how the white do for you, Gary.
What you've got so far sounds good!

Hoping the seeds I sent out perform better
than mine. Not sure I'm going to try to grow
any of my violet seed out, focus on isolating
the F7 and F5 this season. But then again... :think:

It's a tug-of-war.

In a perfect world, Tristen's F1 seed would
germinate. I'm focusing on positive thinking,
hoping rock wool saves me.

Putting the fan on for 2 or 3 hours every day.
Have started feeding with some light fish fertilizer.
Lights on 16/8 cycle. Plants seem to be doing okay.
The larger two plants have root tips showing at the
drain holes (about 28 days since hooks.):

Almost time to move the larger ones into their #3
nursery pots and onto the garage grow table under
one of the 4x4 T5HO Lamps, where they will live
until warmer weather.
