Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

OMG, that PdN x BMJ is just awesome! Talk about
a loaded bush. I wish mine looked like that

The shape on the white pod on the bush is just superb,
and the color to die for! Very interesting that the pods in
the dense shade were more white.

This gets more interesting every day!

Thanks, buddy!

Anyone care to comment?

Overripe?! wait. I thought Bhuter White was White?

I'm wondering about the white plant I have. Where it grows, in a raised bed is quite crowded. So I will open its area up, as I'm pod loaded already, just to see if the color changes when it gets more sunlight.

I hope it stays white. Very interesting that Bhuter's white went violet this season...

How could it at F7?! Did everyone's?

Since the grow out of the F5 generation, the trend is
toward violet pods. For example, of my four plants
from seed from a white pod producer, three are
throwing violet pods, only one white ones.

Maybe the cross is going to mainly produce violet
pods with the sporadic white variety thrown in. Really
hoping Scott's white is the real deal.

I am anxious to hear how Sawyers grow turns out,
and Walchit's, as well, since they are growing lots
of plants.

My 2019 PDN x BMJ peppers are playing out like "The Tale of Two Pepper Plants".

It was the best of times... It was the worst of times...

One of my PDN x BMJ plants that I grew from last years saved seeds (non-isolated) is doing really well.

Although it doesn't have any peppers yet, it inherited a crowded slot in my pepper plot.  So it's been putting all it's energy into growing taller than the other pepper plants around it.  It's growing nice and straight, and hasn't even needed any support from the nearby stakes.  To my relief, it's been handling the heat really well so far.

In this picture, it's just to the right of the ruler (I did mention it's slot became crowded. :) )

Another PDN x BMJ (also from saved seeds from last year) isn't doing hardly anything.  It's only about 8 inches high (that's being gracious).

They're only a few feet apart from each other.

I'm really suspicious the problem is with the gardener, and not with the plant.  But I'm at a loss for explaining why one is struggling so much.

But I'm really happy with the taller PDN x BMJ.  It looks really healthy.  I'm not worried that it doesn't have any pods yet.  I had a few issues that delayed my start this year.  And since it's a chinense, and since it really needed to put it's energy into growing, I'm not surprised it's waiting to put out peppers.  There's still plenty of time for a fine harvest by fall.

here there are *Bhuter White*...thoughts?
Looks good, Rich. They go from purple to some
kind of green stage, then to the final color. Hope
Bhuter's turn out white for you.

My white pods go through a sort of lime green
stage on the way to yellow/white, the violet ones,
not so much.

@ Mitch: When two seeds from the same pod(?) have such a difference,
I have to wonder if there is a root problem down under?

BTW, Were those white pod seeds, or purple/ violet pod seeds?

Good luck getting some pods!

These seeds came from the white varient of the PDN x BMJ.

I typically try to save seeds from a few peppers when I'm not isolating, in order to reduce my chances of leaving myself with only crossed seeds.

But I tend to agree that something is going on with the soil.  The plant itself looks relatively healthy, just very stunted.

I'm nearly positive I had problems with my potting soil this year.  But, by this point, after it's been in the ground this long, I would have thought the potting soil wouldn't be a factor any more.

I'm tempted to yank it out of the ground to see if I can figure out what's going on.  But, since I'm not sure exactly what to look for, I'm holding off on the death sentence for now.

You are right the plant looks very good, just stymied.

You could always dig it up carefully and shake off some soil,
and root prune it a little, then put it in an appropriately-sized
pot. Might help rid the soil of the problem, if that is where it lies.

Or an all out root clean-off, washing off all the soil, trimming
the roots a bit, and replanting/potting in clean soil.

They can
handle lots of sun!

The timing is an issue.  I've got some travel plans coming up.  I hate to make a lot of stressful changes with this plant, and then have to leave it on it's own for a week.  I've got the neighbor watering my plants.  But it would be frustrating for things to go wrong, and not be around to learn anything from it.

Makes sense, cant blame you.

Peace of mind is worth a lot
