TheGreenChileMonster's 2017 GLOG

Now that it is almost time to plant out, I figured I'd start up my GLOG for the year. I've cut out almost all superhots this year, and am growing solely peppers I regularly cook with. Here is a link to my glog last year:

http://thehotpepper.com/topic/60119-thegreenchilemonsters-2016-grow/

I did a good job documenting my grow last season, but I plan to give more regular updates this year. I'm growing more veggies this year too, so I needed to free up some space in my garden. Here is the list for the year. All of these are either OW plants or well established seedlings.

Aji Limo
Aji Mochero
Aji Amarillo
Aji Pacay
Aji Arnaucho
Aji Dulce
Aji Largo (Pubescens)
Aji Oro (Pubescens)
Rocoto Rojo Arequipeño
Rocoto Oculto
Red Peruvian Rocoto
Giant Red Rocoto
Giant Yellow Rocoto
Rocoto Peru Cusco
Mini Red Rocoto
Large Red Rocoto
Turbo Pube
Guatemalan Red Rocoto
Carolina Reaper

I'll start posting pics and updates as soon as I start planting out over the next few weeks. There may also be some veggie and home brew pics in this GLOG throughout the season.

Glad to see ya back aboard Dale, and good luck with your 2017 grow!

I started one Aji Oro plant from your seeds and I think it'll be the star of my lineup this year... I planted in mid-January and the plant has forked 4 times and put out axillary growth at every node. It's a worker for sure!

Wow, nice looking plant! FYI, Aji Oro really likes to grow out sideways and bushy. I'm thinking of tomato caging mine this year, and training all of the shoots upwards, that way it doesn't get too huge horizontally.

And I'll add to that: The Aji Oro are resilient, too. Tough lil buggers. I tore off 3/4 of the coty's on mine and it's still growing. Great looking plant, Stickman!

I also have a little bigger Brown Rocoto that is doing very well. Great germ rate on your seeds, Dale! It's great to see you're doing a glog this year. I will be following. Good luck!

Glad to hear the brown rocoto is doing well for you!

Thanks Dale, I'm on that one... the Aji Oros are supposed to grow well in pots or baskets and I'm gonna have mine in a 5 gallon Air Pot. I'll certainly be curious to see how training the branches upward goes. The branches on all the chiles I've come across are too brittle for that to work, but I wish you luck.

I've trained rocoto upwards before with great success. Here is a pic of a caged rocoto I grew a couple of years ago. That's a 6 foot tomato cage.

Good to see you back Dale!

And I see you're doing what most seem to be doing; migrating the grow more to what winds up on the plate ;)  The seeds you sent me were planted right away last July. And that seems to be the key for me in my climate. They're not loaded down like they will do in your climate, but I have pods! Thanks again for the seeds, very much appreciated!

Good luck this season! And keep it green!

Thanks, glad to be back in the garden again, really glad that last chance of frost is just around the corner. I've been hardening off my OWs, and also some of the rocoto plants I started from seed last fall.

Hey, I was wondering where your grow log was the other day!

I'm growing two pubescens from the seeds you sent me(thanks again!), Aji Oro and Ecuadorian Red Rocoto.
I was just taking a look at them this afternoon, and thinking how good the Aji Oro was looking, probably has the thickest stem out of all my seedlings right now. Seems like everyone is having good luck with that one.

I'll be growing them in fabric pots and moving them around the house, hoping I can find a spot they like and get a few pods before the summer heat hits. Might even have to over-summer them in the house if it gets a little too hot and humid for em.

Glad to hear it, good luck on your season!

My Ecuadorian Red Rocoto didn't survive transplanting for Over Winter at the end of last season. Definitely a bummer, since that plant was a beast, and produced a ton of really delicious pods. I still have seeds, so I'll grow it again next season.

I amended my soil from last year with compost and manure, then potted out my OW plants. Here are a some pics of the process, and also pics of a few of the plants.

A couple of OW rocoto plants ready to start the 2017 outdoor season.

Aji amarillos ready to be huge producers again this year.

Nice Dale! Need a close up of the beer between those OW Rocoto Trees!
I see your Amarillo has a curling up of the leaves too. All three of my specimens from your seed have that. I was worried it was my city water. A number of the leaves have done some interesting curling.

Is there any magic to your soil mix? looks quite barky?

Dale your picture almost answers my question... I used the cloth pots for the first time last season with success can you use them over and over again .... did you rinse them in water to clean .... the money shot is the beer in the background

No magic to my soil mix. I just compost all of my yard waste, including branches, old pepper plants, grass, leaves, spent grain from brewing, vegetable waste, etc.

Don't worry about the curling, those are just the floppy big leaves, perfectly normal. A lot of times they open in the diret sunlight, then curl in the evening, or at night.

I don't even rinse the inside out, honestly. I dump out the soil, pull out all of the big roots, amend it with compost amd manure, then put it right back in the pot.

Here is the beer money shot. It's a Belgian Wit I brewed a few months ago.
