[May 15] What are you working on this week?

Anyway...

So far, the only project I got workin' is some homemade calcium supplement for my garden.
I've seen it come up in a few different topics here recently, so I figured I'd try it out.

Saved a bunch of eggshells from Mother's Day brunch at the restaurant, got them washed, crushed, and drying in the oven. Gonna grind em up, and soak them in vinegar. I'm probably going to need a lot of vinegar...might go get some of that 15% Korean vinegar from the Asian market...and some Pandan cake.

Anyone got any tips?

Trying to track down cheap, used 5 gallon containers but people don't reply on kijiji...if this keeps up I'll have to use a lot of 3 gal buckets which is not ideal.
Maybe try to ask some sandwich shops around town, that use a lot of pickles, olives, etc.

Or grocery store bakeries, they usually don't make much from scratch, so they probably use buckets of frosting and glazes.

Just brought my plants out to the temporary greenhouse on Mothers Day to start hardening off.......Been filling pots with my soil mix and planted a few taters for the first time.....hope to start putting plants in buckets by next weekend.

1 - hail cleanup
2 - seed planting, but with snow/rain predicted, seeds will probably rot.
3 - trying to harden off plants, but little sun
4 - frustrating May wrt gardening
5 - I want Pex Peppers Pueblo chiles

and here it is

Some restaurants (especially sandwich places that use a lot of pickles, seafood places too, idk why) will go through a ton of these buckets. Back when I was collecting buckets I would go around 1 weekend and knock on the BACK door of the restaurants and get somebody's attention to tell them I wanted buckets.  If they say they dont have any right now, just point at the ground and say "stack them here and I'll pick them up." Then go around next weekend and see how many you can get.  I got about 20 doing that one year, Idk how many you need.

I was wondering why you would make your own when calcium carbonate is so readily available (tums, supplements, heck you can go to a wine store and get a bag of the stuff for 2 dollars) so I did some research and found out that calcium carbonate counts as insoluble calcium in non-acid soils, so it won't be used by the plants! its calcium NITRATE that you want. or just the elemental calcium in egg-shells.

anyway, making your own sounds nice, but if you give up then this stuff looks pretty legit and cheap.

I was down to my last half quart sooooooooooooo.....................

I made kimchi
I started this today and just packed it into my fermenter. My "smoothie" is almost 1/2 a Asian pear, a small white onion, 8 garlic cloves, a golf ball sized shallot and the white parts from 8 green onions. Plus around 2 tbs of juice from a previous ferment and 2 tbs fish sauce. About 1 cup of Korean pepper flakes added until the smoothie gets thick,

1 head of nappa and 1 head of Taiwanese cabbage wept for 2 hours and then rinsed 3 times. Carrot shreds and tops from the green onions

Smoothie
