harvesting harvesting early first pods?

I have a couple plants that have only set a couple pods, they are almost full size now.  I've heard that harvesting the first pods early will help create more down the road.  I've never tried this because I always get plenty of pods, but this year has been rough with constant rain and lackluster growth so far.  Do you guys usually harvest the first pods before they mature?
 
I haven't heard of taking early pods, but i have heard of taking the early flowers so the plant focuses it's energy in stalk and limbs thus producing more pods.  Might be the same concept.
