Charlesquik's Growing 2017 2.0

I started planting when the snow was starting to melt around February 19th.
 
The main goal this year is to make the prototype of an automated greenhouse. We will then make a big greenhouse on the family woodlot that need zero human intervention. 
 
Also we are going to use automation for almost everything.

I tried to chose the right balance between super hot and mild so everyone in the family is happy

I used pro mix but it was a mistake because the soil keep to much moisture and I had fungus problem around week 4.

I planted 31 plants this year. ( 1 slot for soil moisture sensors)

With the use of  a raspberry pi we were receiving an email when we needed to water the seedlings.

I also bought a nice Meizhi 450watt full spectrum light. It helped a lot with the slow growing I had from previous year.

I already had buds so I took them one by one.

We tried to make a bigger greenhouse but we feared a neighbor complaint (We live in the city so there are strict rules) so we stayed with previous year size.

We did a rock bottom to help drainage
 
Then we used a mix of  black dirt
shrimp compost
manure
and concentrated shrimp powder

This year I have to share my greenhouse with my step dad tomatoes so the greenhouse is jam-packed.

Automation is the best thing so far.
 
Humidity and temperature are controlled by my own custom program with Arduino.
 
My father was in charge of electronics and I was in charge of the code.
 
 
The electronics are in the wooden box. 
 
I can control the heater and fan independently. Both humidity and temperature are controlled in real time via my program.
 
The raspberry pi is in charge to communicate to my house to the web interface where we can check the greenhouse status.
 
The arduino board is in charge to monitor inside and outside humidity and temperature and control whether the heater or fan are ON or OFF.

We also added a drip irrigation system that is working 1 time for 30 minutes  each week.

Chicken are back!
 
Unfortunately, the last year chickens died this winter of some sort of virus at the chicken coop.

They are often set loose on the yard and they are exploring everywhere. They are very curious little  fellas.

Nice greenhouse you have both put a lot of hard work into it and will now reap the dividends... irrigation lets you relax and enjoy .... lovely chickens do you have problems with foxes

No problem with fox because I live in city suburban. The only wild animals we get are squirrels, marmots, raccoons and skunks.

My step dad got some diseases on his tomatoes plants so he had to remove them from the greenhouse. 
 
Well I won't argue ;) I got room for my peppers now

Nice Charles. I like your automatic window opening. I recently built a greenhouse out of old second hand windows, might do the same thing like you did. 
 
Sorry about photo bucket's egregious behavior.  I lost almost all my
pics from 5 year's of grow logs.  Thanks to the extreme membership,
I can now just upload pix from my phone or computer right to THP.
Best few bucks I've spent.

The funny thing is we are talking about the automated greenhouse to people who are working with greenhouse or are operating greenhouse of a good size and they are like "WHATTT IS THIS REAL?? I want to buy one! The cost of commercial automation equipment for this would be 10 000$ +"
 
And yet we are doing this for like 250$.

Being I'm a major computer geek, I would love to know what hardware (boards etc.) you're using to monitor the system you designed. I'm assuming they use a wireless link?

We are using a raspberry pi for the web interface
 
We are using an arduino uno with a  shield ( to use the actuator )
 
The arduino is sending via radio antenna the data to the raspberry pi so that he can show metrics on the web interface.
 
The whole setup could work without the  rasberry pi but its nice to check the greenhouse status on my phone :)
 

There is two dht22 temperature/humidity sensor for indoor and outdoor temp/hum 
There is two relay to control whether fan and heater are ON/OFF 

The hardest part is to write the code in C  (I think you can use python too) because the documentation isn't very good and project like us are very rare.
 
Its kind of been trial and error so far but it paid off.

I love a challenge. I write some sql/php code on the Linux servers. Hopefully this is not too far off!
