De-spicing my mortar and pestle

Heeeeey guys, let's just start another topic, because why not right?

I've been drying some sweet peppers in a dehydrator I've borrowed from a friend. Now they're almost done, but my mortar and pestle are completely spicy from grinding up my hot peppers before. I can't get the stuff off with soap, and I don't want to contaminate my sweet pepper powder.

How should I do this? Getting another mortar and pestle is not an option, the good ones are pretty expensive here.

Yeah, I figured as much. That stuff is persistent. Welp that's too bad. I've been waiting for these peppers to dry the whole weekend haha!

I make a lot more hot powder than sweet powder though, so I'd want to use it for hot pepper as well. Guess I have to save up for two grinders then :D

Thanks for the answer.

I would say ethanol. Try buying some grain alcohol (id avoid rubbing alcohol since you'll be preparing food with this) and scrub it in, let it soak, pour it off a few times.

You can also add coarse salt and scrub the oil with a paper towel. The salt acts as a scrubbing agent. My memory is coming back to me. Haven't used mine in years.

Coffee grinder dedicated, the oils take a long time to go away...

I gotta go with Joyner on this one.  Even more if your set is stone.  Ceramic is like plates and the oil / alcohol will get it up eventually.  Stone and forget it.  But why not make it easier and get a coffee grinder for each?

Because he wants to crush the peppers today. He said he would look into grinders also.

I agree with aj drew though. For future use, consider buying a ceramic one. That's what I have and it cleans up really easy. I've also used a chinese soup spoon and a regular bowl. Works great. Even an ice cream scoop works well. Necessity is the mother of invention. lol

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many new replies to my topic, my apologies. Why do we just get notifications on quotes and likes, but not on replies to topics you've created? I miss a lot of stuff because of that.

Thanks a lot for all the great tips, I'll try them all out tomorrow! Oil, wipe, rinse, scrub with salt, grind some rice, repeat. I'm also saving up for a decent grinder to use, makes it a lot easier.

Hell, in my earlier days, I used a cereal bowl and the ass end of a screwdriver

That comment is even funnier if you remove the context, lol!
