chinense Which Habanero Is The "Best"?

I am getting Jamaican Hot Chocolate and there is room for one Habanero.

I had the privilege to have some Habanero powder in the past and I really loved it, but I didn't asked which variety it was from and the guy I bought it from does not work for that store anymore so I cannot ask him. It doesn't matter though.

I did Googled it but I found nothing about different varieties and tastes. Forum's own search function, didn't turned up anything relevant; strange... Anyway. :)

I will not claim that there is such a thing as a "best" Habanero. We are different persons and we have different tastes. So if you could share our experiences about the Habaneros you have tasted and what Habanero you think is the "best" and why, it would be great!

If we can gather information about all of them I can make a PDF and/or JPEG for the forum. ;)

Neat idea! I would figure out if you do or do not want to include scotch bonnets... They are closely related, similar heat level, and often overlap growing regions.

Based on what I've seen here on THP (as I don't have enough experience to claim a favorite) Jamaican hot chocolate, chocolate hab, all the congos (habaneros from Trinidad), Bahamian goat, and MOA scotch bonnet are all very popular.

I can personally vouch that the Bahamian goat is excellent, and I'm pissed my overwinter and seeds didn't make it this season, so I have no BG this year.

Good luck, excited to watch the results.

Paper lantern hab is popular. Red Savina is the Habanero. Tiger Paw, also popular. There's another one I've heard of , I think its "Big Sun"(?) Habanero?

Someone else will know...

I haven't tried enough to have a favourite, only ever had the good old Red.

I have only grown Red Savina, Orange, and Chocolate and can say by far the Chocolate is the tastiest.
The Red has a sweetness to it that makes a nice sauce and the Orange is just basic Hab flavor but the Chocolate has a sweet-earthy taste that I really like.
I'm thinking JHC has a similar flavor.

Harold's Saint Barts is a good one, Congo Red is also great, and a heavy producer. Cheiro Do Norte is a personal favorite for a beautiful mild Habanero with lighter aroma and great production. There are too many choices to choose only one.

I have noticed that every time someone asks here about favourite flavoured peppers two are brought up repeatedly (every efn time!).. choc habanero and Bahamian goat.

I have grown both and they are both very tasty and prolific. I would like to add that the P. Dreadie Scotch Bonnet is amazing also.. in fact I cant overstate how good it is.

Another variety that is always repeatedly mentioned (I have not grown this) is the paper lantern habanero so safe to say its a good bet.

If you grow all four its a safe bet and you will get to taste brown, orange, yellow and red varieties.

1. My red savina has nice thick walls on it. I love using if for jelly
2. I grew JHC and normal Choc Hab side by side with no appreciable difference.
I mix minced choc habs with creamcheese and stuff it inside burger patties.
I also LOVE choc Hab powder sprinkled on everything i eat. from frozen pizza, to kraft mac and cheese to alfredo, its really good.
3. B. Goats are my Fav. use them for everything. BUT i would put them into a bonnet category based on their aroma and shape. just different from my hab's
4. i've heard paper lanterns are pretty hot?

I am not trying to redefine what is considered a Habanero. If a large portion of people consider them as Habaneros they will be on the list but it is only logical that peppers that have "Habanero" in their name will be first. The important is to have a list of the different varieties and information about their taste and other attributes to help new growers and other pepper enthusiasts choose the "best" for them. —But it won't hurt to have one as the Community's Favorite. Maybe with a little crown icon next to it. ;)

I love that so far most of us seem to have no strong favorites. I too am like that. I will use what ever chili pepper I feel that it goes well with the dish I am preparing. When I choose hot chilies I might use the one Habanero or the other Habanero or if I am feeling daring enough, go for a Reaper (not that I have any of them at the moment, but if I had them I would do exactly that).

Thank you all for the great responses! <3
I am starting working on the tables. ;) If you could say more about the taste of each variety that would be great!

I found this list on habaneromadness.com. I throw it here as a reminder of the different varieties and in case someone has to add or remove a variety.
    Mild or Sweet Habaneros
    Red Habanero
    Orange Habanero
    Caribbean Red
    Habanero Condor’s Beak
    Big Sun Habanero
    Golden Habanero
    Mustard Habanero
    Scotch Bonnet Pepper
    Hot Paper Lantern
    Red Savina
    Datil Peppers
    Peach Habanero
    Yucatan White Habanero Peppers
    White Bullet Habanero (TM)
    Peruvian White Habanero
    White Giant Habanero Peppers
    Jamaican Chocolate Habanero Peppers

If there are varieties you hate, by all means feel free to mention them. Information about how easy or hard is to grow a variety and how they fare on colder climates is also very important. Stores have some information but on the other hand they sell seeds. Feedback from the community if far better.

Effing epic! I'm gonna try this soon. I just minced up choco habs and mixed em with the meat but not with cream cheese.

Yup they rule and yup more bonnet.

If I had to pick just 3 it would be the following

1- MOA or p dreadie take your pick.
2- JHC, Jamaican Hot Chocolate
3- Caribbean Red

Each one of the above have very different yet delicious flavors and are much hotter than the plain old orange hab.

Weird...I thought you'd name a different pepper...

Chocolate Habanero and Bahamian Goat are on the lead for far.
(I counted any positive comment as a vote)

P.S.
Anyone for Europe has any Bahamian Goat seeds? Sent me a PM. ;)
