Buncha Malarky 2018 edition

Welcome to 2018
There is probably not going to be a whole lot of action around here until March 1st when I'll start soaking seeds.
I was overwhelmed in 2017, starting in January was not a good idea. This year I plan to pot up the plants in stride and avoid being root bound. Starting in March and outside in buckets in the middle to end of May. I'll probably try to sell excess plants locally on CL/FB as well, instead of trying to keep every seed I sprout alive myself.

2018 Grow List so far...
SB7J
7pot Cinder
PDN x Bonda
Peach Bhut-WM strain
CGN21500-WM strain
LemonDrop
PapaDreadie SS-Good Pheno from TGCM
Aji Limo Rojo
Aji Limo Amarillo
Aji Panca
Giant Red Rocoto
Peruvian Red Rocoto-OW
Yellow Brainstrain-Growdown

I'm really struggling to decide if I should grow Aji Amarillo, Big Red Rocoto's, and maybe even Panca now that I found frozen amarillos/rocotos and panca paste at the store now. And the amarillos and rocoto's take soo long to ripen...
I'd like to fit in Aji Dulce, Aji Arnaucho, cgn23209, SugarRush Peach and Trepadeira do Werner, but I don't know.

I've got enough BahaGoats in the freezer to last me I think. I actually might have enough Amarillos too now that I think of it.
I'm growing cgn21500 just to finally get it off my bucket list. I hope its good.
The more I type, the more bummed i get that i can't grow all these...

I cut most of them down this weekend. The weather here is going to be awful for the next 2 weeks. lots of rain and cold.
I kept my aji oro's and red rocoto's try to finish ripening up whats left.

Here's my Halloween Trick or Treat Bowl

10 Things I learned this year
1. Don't Start on Jan 1st
2. Don't Start on Jan 1st
3. After 3 years I finally got decent CGN21500...and I didn't really care for them. YMMV
4. I only really need 1 Aji Limo plant...yellow or red, they are both great producers and I've got way more than I'll be able to use.
5. My C.pubescens did not like full sun, even in Wisconsin. Next year I will try them in shady areas.  (Dale->what exposure do your pubes get on that fence line?)
6. Watch out for Brown Marmolated Stinkbugs. Aphids weren't so bad this year...
7. I need to find a compact roma/paste tomato
8. maybe only grow 1 stupid hot pepper per year.
9. definitely think hard on what peppers I can buy in the store (frozen amarillos, frozen red rocoto, dried pequin, mail-order hatch chiles), so that I can use my limited space to grow others.
10. I need to get my peppers off the deck so my wife will be less unhappy with my hobby.

2019 pepper list here I come!

Your Oros are marvelous, Matt! Mine was....stunted this year, only got about a foot tall, never did flower....until a couple weeks ago, after I brought it in. Now I have flowers and fruit setting. Not sure what to do but go with it. Next season she gets a new home, a 10 gallon Air-Pot (or cheaper reasonable facsimile)...I'm still thinking of a raised bed plot specific for summering over-winters...and a greenhouse............

If you're able I'd maybe try an experiment with your looong season plants.
try a 5ga and a 10 ga and see if their is a difference in yield. You could even clone one of your OW's for the project.
I think confining the plant to a smaller container may be the way to force a harvest rather than getting bigger and bigger plants...with more green pods.

A green house would probably help out a lot. especially if you had some passive/active heat source.
This Fall came too cold too soon here as well

I do have two Rocoto Rojos and two Peruvian Reds in my overwinter harem, so that experiment should be an easy one to try. Last year I grew a Rocoto Amarillo in a 5 gallon grow bag and one in the 8th acre. I did observe that the Rocotos have a tendency to sprawl a bit if left untrained. The bagged plant didn't achieve the size, but if I remember, the harvests were close, maybe because I brought the bagged one in so the it could finish ripening up.

The Darlin' Bride & I are negotiating for terms on location of a greenhouse. I have a really strong argument in favor of attachment to a permanent structure, namely the house...Electricity could be easily managed  without stringing drop cords across the lawn....

Yeah, Fall. We're having a string of really nice days now, high 50s to 70....Except EVERY night suffers a hard freeze.

Hey, Matt, I looked at Trippa's PdN xJMA pic on the last page. I think this are ripe.
The late Fall pods usually have a bit more of a violet blush to them. I pick them
when they start to soften a bit.

That is (was?) an awesome plant. Loaded with great looking pods  :woohoo:

BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YUP! buahahahaha

Hahahaha I see that I mis-spelled Trippa's PdN x BMJ cross
above.  Either fat fingers, or senior moment, not sure which!
Serves me right for not reading my post before hitting the button.
especially with the crazy spell check in this editor!

How was your harvest off the cross?  The pods look awesome.
Did any go to white, or did they all stay violet?
