Genetikx 2018

First time doing a glog but have followed others for years now. I don't expect monster 5' plants being just north of Chicago but I do expect to have a good time in the dirt and to neglect pulling weeds a time or twelve. The goal is grow a ton of peppers for sauce and maybe even get into powders this year.

We're currently rocking a 4' 4 tube hydrofarm T5, which I think is an awesome fluorescent. In the past I've supplemented with regular shop lights in the seedling stage and for overflow but might get another proper T5 soon. First time growing in this new house so hopeful to avoid mites, aphids, and the like. I'll end up throwing some plants in the backyard and then also claim a spot at the community garden.

Best of luck to all the awesome grows here at THP. Hope everyone has a great 2018.

Does the community garden area have a water supply, or do you have to bring your own?
Looks good.

Yes, right next to my plot too and then one on the other side. Was at a different community garden for the past two years and had to carry 5 gallon buckets of water about a block. That sh!t got old. Came back to this spot cuz the dirt rocks and had my best year ever here back in '15. Weather was much better that year so far so we'll see.

Is it hard to get into a community garden? Since the water supply is next to your garden, I hope the other gardeners have some respect for your area, and don’t take a short cut through your turf.

Not hard at all, just Google "*your city or town* community garden" and you should find a link to your park district's garden. I think they're pretty mainstream these days, and it's not like getting into a co-op in Manhattan lol. Mine probably has 4 or 5 open spots. I don't even live in the town where mine is at, just a quick 5ish minute drive tho

Garden I'm at is laid out really well, it would actually be more difficult for anyone to go thru my spot, as opposed to walking around it to get water. Not to mention everyone is pretty cool and respectful.

Friggin 39 degrees when I woke up today smh. Mother nature needs to get her act together

Was chilly down in central IL too. By the time I got to the farm at 7 AM it had warmed up to the lower 50's. Had a nice calm day, two sprinkles that didn't amount to much (rain gauge got 3 whole drops in it), then it got sunny and hot. All that sprinkle did was stir up the gnats and biting flies. Very annoying. Then it got overcast and super windy after 1 PM - I was seeing 40+ mph winds by the time I left.

We haven't had rain here in nearly a month. We're at the first stage of drought now and my well is blowing more air than water out. Every time a squall blows through it either goes just north of us, or just south of us. One county down (about 30 miles south) they've had over 8 inches of rain in the last 3 weeks. We've had ZERO.

Your plant out looks outstanding, and your plants are much healthier looking than mine. :)

Finally able to plant out at the community garden. Think this is 81 pepper plants and 3 tomatoes. Soil is super primo, added compost to the bottom of each hole. Probably dug way deeper than I needed to but always want to set up the roots for success. Took about 6 hours

Looks great! Do you have any problems with pilfering? It always seems to be an issue here at my community garden. Two years ago, someone stole my Inca Red Drop. The ENTIRE PLANT. It was loaded & ready for harvest. They must have thrown a trash bag over it, as it was 40" across, 24" tall and not a single fruit was left behind. Only an empty hole in the ground.

EDIT:  Oops....just saw the conversation about the very subject of theft.

I was just wondering if there was a big demand for garden space in the big city. Wondering if there’s a waiting list and such. There are some community gardens at some of the local churches around me. Also in the big cities like Flint and Detroit.

Hey Nancy, all good! I think the fence helps here. Sucks to hear about your Inca ughhh! Even two years later, still hurts I bet!

I'm about 30 miles north of the city. I went back to my old community garden. I could walk to the one I had the past two years but due to better conditions, I'll take the 5 minute drive to my old spot. There's a bunch to choose from around here if you look

Ok, will start with the bad...

This is not diseased, dried out, or improperly hardened off. It's a bih jolokia x sugar rush peach aka Dopey, probably f2, and I think it's just weird genetically. I know other growers saw the super wavy leaves on their own plants. Bet this guy just wants some shade all year. He's in full sun from sun up to sunset. Hottest day today so far at about 85, but Dopey is the only one showing stress

Zapotec coming along. Wish I had many more than one

Hope these biker billys fatten up. Looking like serrano right now. Anyone know if this is typical for immature pods?

aaZ3y0F.jpg

Paul's pdn x bonda ma jacques doing pretty good. That is NOT my minivan lol

UH0ZKTt.jpg

Hab purple getting big and beautiful

chL4315.jpg

Scotch Belize nice and healthy. Thanks again Jedi! Everything you sent is doing good

FjYl4hQ.jpg

Carbonero cream. Jedi, see?

D3, I feel this omni bonnet might be a little different than what you got last year. Here's ta hopin. The other 3 i have seem to have the small "long" thin pods. Close eye on this one.

Here's the crew, need to get veggies in the remaining space this weekend. My white jeep waaay in the background lol...where we're supposed to park. I got a $10 ticket last weekend for being barely in the grass pffffft

There is a lot more shade on my garden than I thought there would be. I'm thinking the sun is still gonna move to the north a little and that will get some more light on them.  Maybe the shaded ones will end up doing better if we have a lot of 100+ days
