bpiela glog 2018 - Giving it another go...

Ok.  Just started cleaning up my grow area.  Will be starting seeds tomorrow.

Last year was brutal so I am trying  some new things this year.

1. No overwinters.  I am hoping that in the past, the plants I brought in to overwinter were the source of the many aphids I have battled.  I guess the aphids could also be coming in from the soil I purchase, which is either Fox Farms Happy Frog or Miracle-Gro Potting mix.  I haven't nuked the soil in the past because we use our microwave for food.  If I can get a used microwave, then I might try to nuke the soil first...
2. Airflow.  I am going to increase airflow by a bunch.  Looking to get a couple more cheap standing fans and have them on blasting the plants for the period of time that the lights are on, which is 18 hours.
3. I am starting my plants a little later this year.  Well maybe not all of them. :liar:  Well last year, I started the chinenses in mid December.  This year will be more like mid January although I will start a few tomorrow since I want to start the Growdown Yellow Brain Strains ASAP.  Baccatums I started end of January last year and Annuums I started mid February of last year.  I am going to move both of them to mid March.
4. Quantity.  I don't know what to do here.  I just like to start a ton of stuff because there are just too many pepper varieties still to try.  If I am able to somehow keep the bugs away and am successful indoors, then I would like to sell extra plants locally for a minimal price.  I have about 120 varieties that I will attempt to grow this year.

I still have the Park's Bio Domes for seed starting.  I have been fairly successful there so no need to change.

So, for the first dome, I will be planting the following starting tomorrow.  Pics to follow once hooks arise.

Right Hand Side of Dome
Bonda Ma Jacques
Bonda Mahala
Jonah Yellow Brain
Buckeye Bhutlah
CAP 691
Carbonero Sherwoods
Swiss Chocolate
Purple Carolina Reaper
Super Datil
Yellow Brain Strain (Growdown)

Left Hand Side of Dome
Fatalii
Gourmet Jigsaw Fatalii
Orange Scorpion Fatalii
Genghis Khan Brain
Habanero Adalberto
Habanero Mustard
Habanero Roatan
Habanero White Bullet
Yellow Hand Grenade
Yellow 7Pot Cross F3

That is all for now.

Looks like a good list to start from Ben, good luck with it! Were you having problems with aphids when you were starting your seedlings inside or after transplanting outside?

Good luck in '18, hopefully the year you avoid aphids. Probably part soil variety, I'm looking at you MG, but moreso how the soil was stored prior to your purchase. Big box stores that keep soil outside all summer are bound to have bugs. That's why I like to get mine from the hydro store, everything kept indoors. I'm assuming your aphid problems have been while growing inside.

Habanero Adalberto, that's a new one for me. Looks like a great variety tho!

Rick, Thanks!  I have the aphid issue inside.  I have never actually seen an aphid outside in the garden but I assume they are there somewhere.  Is it possible the aphids are overwintering themselves somewhere in my basement?  :scared:

Good point!  The MG is always purchased at a Home Depot / Lowes type of store where they have been outside for a period of time.  The FF I have purchased from the hydro store and that has always been stored in doors...  Yes, my aphid issues are inside.  Last year was horrendous.  The Habanero Adalberto is sold by the Hippy Seed Company.  I think they also did a video on YouTube on the pepper as well.  Looked interesting and different.

I know the nursery here has their Fox farm outside. not only can bugs get in it, when it gets rained on the nutrients are leeched from the bags. Ffof is expensive and I would prefer my kelp and work castings in the bag, not ran off on to their parking lot.

Do you have any plants that you've brought inside to over-winter? During the growing season the plants outside usually get groomed by the friendly insects like ladybugs and lacewings, but when you bring your plants inside the aphid eggs hatch and there aren't friendlies to do the grooming. That's been my experience anyhow.  Every time I've tried to bring plants inside I've gotten aphids... especially on the Pubiscens varieties.

Yeah, I am staying away from any overwinters this year to see if that has been my problem.  It would be a wondrous thing if I didn't get aphids this year.  I would never overwinter again, or at least I would put overwinters in some other area far away from my seedlings.

Started another round of chinense seeds.  No hooks yet on the ones I started on Wednesday (of course) but I had the seed collection out so I started more.

This time I started the following, 3 cells of each:

Right Hand Side of Dome
7 Pot BBG Pumpkin
7 Pot BBG Yellow
7 Pot Julian
7 Pot Lava Chocolate
7 Pot Lava Red
7 Pot Lucy
7 Pot Nebru
7 Pot Primo Caramel
Apocalypse Scorpion
Bhutlah Gold

Left Hand Side of Dome
Bahamian Goat
Beni Highlands
Bhut Jolokia Caramel
Bhut Jolokia Indian Carbon
Bhut Jolokia Yellow
Big Black Mama
Big Caramel Mama
Big Mustard Mama
Big Red Mama Stinger F1
Big Yellow Mama

Good luck this season Ben!

Aphids....I look at the plants everyday or so. The first sign is the shiny material they leave on the leaves. When I spot an infected plant I isolate it and treat it.  Usually ants are associated with the Aphids.

Ok, got some seeds to pop.   Got different results here across to two BioDomes.  The first Biodome I started, I used old dried out plugs that I thought would get spongy again once I added water.  I did not get the same germination results here, but I think the plugs is just a random thing.  Anyways, here is a pic of the first dome:

So, in this dome, I started three cells of the Yellow Brain.  Only one popped so far, so I highlighted that with the arrow.  Since I didn't get all three cells to pop ( will still continue to try ) I will probably start the last few seeds in order to maximize my chances of having a plant come May.

The second dome did much better.  Aside from two varieties not popping at all, I have 3 cells on almost everything else.  Here is a pic:

The Primo Caramel's are the large ones at the bottom right.

Gonna start one more dome with 20 chinense varieties.  Going with the following:

Hainian Yellow Lantern (Thanks Simmy!)
Maraba
Mystery Wine (Had a few seeds left from Joyners)
Naga Capppuccino
Naga Viper
Nagabon
Nagabon x Congo Chocolate
Podzilla Chocolate
GP Red Spectacular (From Gnarly Pods)
Aji Oro
Scotch Bonnet Elysium Oxide
Scotch Bonnet MOA
Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion
Tobago Treasure
Orange Longtail Scorpion
Tshololo Orange
Tabanaga (From Jeff Contonio)
Unreaper
Yaki Brown (from Juanitos)
Yuquitania

Figured I would try a Pube in there.  It seems like a lot of folks like the Aji Oro so that is what I will try.   In the past, I have gotten pubescens to grow but I didn't get any pods.  I didn't shade them too well so I am sure that is the primary reason for the lack of pods.

Growing indoors you don't have mother nature or it's insects to help feed or combat aphids.

I use foxfarm soils and a few others purchased from hydro and home depot stores.

Never gotten aphids from soil, whiteflys, thrips, mites yes. But not aphids.

I am battling a very small amount of them now on my 3 indoor over winters...will be treating them in a few hrs.

Great looking list, happy growing.

Great varieties Ben ... squash those aphids this season and you will be flying ... all the best for this season

Thanks!  That is definitely the goal.  Still looking to pick up an old microwave that I can use for sterilizing/killing all bugs in my potting soil.

Thanks!  Last year was rough with the bugs.  I really did have all of the above with aphids, mites, whiteflies, etc.  I will see what I can do this year.  If I can keep the bugs in check, I should have a good selection of plants to use and hopefully some to sell cheap locally.

Superb list Ben, flavour, heat , hope you have a fun and pest free season,
Really hope the HYL will be fruitful in your cimate, was one of my best producers in a pot, but was I'm a poly tunnel.
Watching keenly from over the pond. [emoji106]

Good luck from hear on out.

Hope the dirty word won't show this time around. ;)

Thanks!  Hoping the bugs that Shall Not Be Named do not show up.  The Voldemort of the insect world.  :scared:

Started a few more seeds just so I might get some of the 1x plants above to go to 3x.  Plus, I started a couple of crosses, including D3's Aji Painapple F2, BOC x Reaper, BBG7 x Tabasco and the last couple of seeds I had from the Madam Jeanette x Goronong cross.  I also started a couple of seeds from a cross I got from seeds I purchased from Juanitos awhile back.  They were supposed to be White Hab Bullets but they were accidentally crossed with Urfa Biber.  This is an F3 where the F2 pods were small and peach colored.  Hopefully they germinate and we get something similar.
