Show Us Your Pubes! Group GLOG From The Rocoto Giveaway

I am starting this thread for folks who received some Pubescens seeds from me through the Pubescens giveaway. I figured it would be fun to see everyone's progress, plus have a general place to share any pics, growing techniques, and general Pubescens knowledge. I wish everyone great success in their gardens this year.

Even if you didn't receive seeds from me, and want to contribute info about your Pubescens plants this year, please feel free to share.

When I grow ecuadorian rocotos, they usually still flower, and pod well in the heat. Maybe tune down the nitrogen foliar sprays, and try a good higher phosphorous/potassium fertilizer.

I usually feed my rocotos the Espoma Garden Tone organic fertilizer, once they start to bud. I've had really good flower and pods sets year after year on my Pubes with that stuff. It's a 3-4-4.

I'm logging/noting the Espoma, Dale. Growth and color have been such a goal that the prize eludes me. Remembering last year, what pubes I had went into pod production about the first week of August, a real nail biter in Zone 3, but I did wind up with a fair amount of peppers for being my first year with them. I need to take better notes.

Bummer about the Ecuadorian stettoman, but hope it manages and good that the others are kicking it into gear.

We've been getting hotter than normal temps here too and it's pumping the breaks some on what should be peak pod setting.  Looks like your rocs are ready to roll though and hopefully more moderate temps will prevail.  There's only so much season to get things done and pubes aren't the fastest peppers out there.

Well, the Ecuadorian is still green and, other than it's wilty appearance, showing no signs of just dropping dead. I have a modicum of hope.

We actually hit 47 degrees this morning. The Trailer (parked) pubes look ecstatic. Our lows are projected to be mid 50s through August, highs bouncing around a bit between 75 and 85. And yeah, I stress the pubes since I found what glorious little nuggets they are!!

The Ecuadorian is in isolation against a north wall of the house. As droopy as she looks, there is a large number of flower buds waiting in the nodes. I really want to pull her out and rinse the root ball, but I have no doubt I'd be dashing all hope for a harvest this season if I do.

Out of all these plants I still have to figure out which will be overwintered. Don't have room for all. So far only three have NO flowers, an Aji Arequipeña and two Rocoto Rojos. They've forked long ago, but I guess are taking their sweet ass time. I'm really interested in trying the Arequipeña, have heard some amazing things about certain sausages and cheeses stuffed into them.....

The odd Miraflores looks like its finally taking off. Foliage and growth look more normal now.

My rocotos generally seem a bit behind this year, likely due to the atypical 90F temps we've been having.  This one Arequipa has been trucking right along though and is noticeably ahead of the other Areq's both in size and production (including the iso pair).  Figure I'll bag a likely branch or two and see if that carries over to next year.

Had a big set back with huge high temps causing flower drop 3 weeks ago.

Temps have been in the 90 to 100 past 3 weeks. Another scorcher today.

I put up umbrellas to shade during 11am to 5pm and it has helped on new growth and new flowering.

Couple glory shots.

Pineapple rocoto. This one lost 30 or more blooms.
Only a half dozen peppers currently.

Red rocotos. Already harvested half dozen off this plant.

Labeled Orange rocoto but has white flowers might have mislabeled.

Another Red plant.

My Turbo has quit dropping blossoms, about a half dozen pods have set, appear to be in for the duration. Aji Largo has a few podlets without the telltale yellowing stem, I think we're good there too. One of my Peruvian Reds is flowering like it has a parade float to decorate, but so far every single one has been dropping. A few plants are still refusing to blossom.

The Ecuadorian lives, and has one open blossom. If it weren't so damned droopy I'd say it's one of the healthiest looking of the bunch.

Or temps have been roller coastering, it might even get up to 70 today, yesterday was 89, tomorrow supposed to be 80. I smell an early Fall coming.

An ode to open pollination?

These two pubes are both Peruvian Reds, and they don't translate well in the photos, but the blossoms are very different in color. The lower plant has a striated lavender petal, while the one up top is a a very standard looking purple...

From the front of the blossom it's harder to tell. First is the lower on, second the upper..

And here's that worm-attacked Ecuadorian, still alive, looks like it's dying, but has held it's face like this for some many days, no yellow, no dropping anything:

And yes, flowers and possible podlet!!

Aji Largo--Do they go through a black phase? This one is slowly blackening, no other signs of ill health. It's also the only pod on this plant.

For any concerned, both the Large Red and the Ecuadorian are producing pods, the Large Red going into a high gear.

The Ecuadorian Red, still showing the effects of cutworm:

And the Large Red, which appears to be showing the resolve of full recovery from cutworm....

Everyone's plants look great!
Honestly I just wanted to comment because I put priority on looking at new posts of glogs I'm actively following and having replied makes that easier.

Yeah, that blackening is normal for aji largos. The pepper will eventually turn a dark red.

Really awesome pics on this page and glad to see people's rocs coming into production.  I'm not familiar with Miraflores, but I see some of the pods have the classic shoulders of a San Isidro or Ecuadorian and some don't.  The finishing color looks outstanding.

Don't have anything tremendous to share, but took these couple pics the other day playing around with the macro.

Lo and behold i found my first ripe Miraflores yellow today. Being a greedy bastard i hid it in my pocket so as not to share my prized pinky finger sized pepper. I snuck away into my PC room chuckling with delight. Carefully i sliced it in half. Leaving 1 half with seeds and 1 without. OH YES!!!! Sweet, so juicy...sooo sooo soft as it melted away into bliss.

Just as i was enjoying my prize, my brother walks in. DAMN!!!!! So reluctantly i cut it in half length wise. Handed 1/4th of my prize to my retched sibling and quickly inhaled mine.

WOOO the seed end has considerably more heat. I cant begin to really describe the flavor. Its unlike any pepper ive ever tasted. More like a unsweetened jelly or marmalade than a pepper.
