Devv-2018-Loving life in the dirt

Here we go again! ;)

This year will be a mix of in the dirt and container growing. Mostly in the dirt. I have some OW's going, 5 are cut back, 6 are pubes that still spend time outdoors as the weather allows. I have pH issues in the dirt, working on that, and hoping for some better results this season. One thing the wife and I decided is to NOT grow into the fall again. I was pulling plants the same weekend I started my seeds. I'm using 4 2 bulb T8's with 6,500K bulbs, and 1 4 bulb T5 with I believe 6,500K bulbs.

That is fantastic news Scott. Once the soil changes and the worms move in that soil is just perfect and will get even better with time - make that soil nice and loamy. :metal:

Oh yeah, I'm stoked! I almost bought worms to add, because I knew the soil was getting close. Now it's just work on that Ph. ;)

Good news about worms being present Scott! Just one thing... do you have Armadillos in your area? They love worms too...

Thanks Rick,

Yes we do, but I have a nice wooden fence to keep them and most of the other critters at bay ;)

Ahh see that's probably where I went wrong. I "encouraged" them to bend up at the end of the trench. Then when they started growing there was hard-packed clay immediately under the curve. Once the plant got heavy it compressed that bend, water and nutes quit flowing up the stem, and they died.

Lesson learned. :)

Well I do prop them up a little but strive for just a bit of curve.

Scott great to see you getting your plants in the dirt ... unfortunately we have been hit by the beast from the east and storm "Emma" colliding they have produced nothing but snow across the country... can't see anything going in the ground till at least May/June

Thanks John!

Sorry about the bad weather, hoping it turns around ASAP!

I started planting a week ago today, still have quite a bit to do!

The soil temps are good to go!

I pretty much lost 8 weeks of yard work due to 2 things; Bad weather, either raining just enough to not be able to do stuff, or too cold. Then it was the back issue. Somewhere during that time I hopped on the tractor and removed 6 Crepe Myrtle trees. I hated to do it, as they were beautiful trees. They were tall enough to shade half the garden, AND they setup a root web system that extended 30 feet into the garden 40 feet wide.

And then I had to process the trees. I started by chipping them up with the chipper, 2 days of doing that and I built a fire just to git er done.

Back row is Jalapenos, mostly Zapotec, with a couple of farmers market jals. Front row is mostly bells. I figured I would grow what we mostly buy :shh:

Poblano's on the right the others are Big Jim and Anaheim.

Still gotta find homes for these...

A shot of the North side of the garden that's fenced. I have more growing on the North side outside the fence. Garlic, onions, and potatoes.

It's a bit too hot for a plant yet LOL :shh:

Good on ya Scott... I'm so jealous of that beautiful start! Did you plant the 'matters farther apart this year?

Looks great!! Gonna be a bountiful garden soon enough. I'm jealous of the weather by you.. I'd love to be able to get out into the garden but it's still a few weeks before I can even think about that.. and another 1.5-2 months before I can think about planting anything.. ugh

How do you like the big jims and zapotecs? I'm growing those for the first time this year. What is the flavor of the big Jim like? I don't think I've ever tried a New Mexican chile variety

Thanks Rick!

Nope, I did not plant them farther apart. My brain envisions a larger garden then I actually have when I sow, LOL

I will trim them some this year which should help. I never get anything extra from them once they outgrow the cages anyway

This is my first year planting both the Zapotec's and Big Jim's. The Big Jim's are supposed to be a Hatch pepper, hopefully the hot Hatch. We bought some last year at the grocery store and made Chili Releno from scratch. It came out super fantastic! Hoping these are the ones ;)  It was similar to a Poblano in flavor, but with a thinner skin.
I've read good things about the Zapotec, I have 8 plants going. I hope they live up to their reputation! A lot of what we're growing this year reflects what we buy, so we went all in with those varieties. A few are to experiment and see if we like them.

Great setup you have there. Cages up early!
I wish I had those cages up before it was to late .

Will follow your grow. good luck!

Don't laugh, but I have cages from the early 80's :shh:

looking good so far. can't put my guys out for a while still.

Thanks Jaunitos!

I'm hoping they do well this year! My soil test was a smh, but I made some changes. Soil Ph was through the roof, and one can only work so much of a change in a season without doing damage. Fingers are crossed!
