Devv-2018-Loving life in the dirt

Here we go again! ;)

This year will be a mix of in the dirt and container growing. Mostly in the dirt. I have some OW's going, 5 are cut back, 6 are pubes that still spend time outdoors as the weather allows. I have pH issues in the dirt, working on that, and hoping for some better results this season. One thing the wife and I decided is to NOT grow into the fall again. I was pulling plants the same weekend I started my seeds. I'm using 4 2 bulb T8's with 6,500K bulbs, and 1 4 bulb T5 with I believe 6,500K bulbs.

So here's the list:

We live on top of what's known as "Skunk Hill". Yeah, we have a lot of skunks and turkeys, too.

We used to have this dog named Otis, my son gave him to us. What a beautiful, sweet dog. A Pitbull x Bull Mastiff cross. In one 12 month period he got sprayed by skunks 9 times, he killed 8 of them, and then there were the run ins with the Porcupines...he never did learn..

By mid June I'm pretty much done here. Nothing likes setting fruit in the high 90's to low 100's. So it's always go fast and hard early and keep ones fingers crossed!

I can't believe that you don't keep at least a couple "over-summers" below a sill in the house, like maybe some 70s loving Rocotos, which would probably happily pump out more than a few juicy rewards for the space given them in an air conditioned hidey-hole? ALL of my Pubes last season came from plants that had nary a blossom on them before I brought them in in the Fall. We may be opposites climactically, but the same physics should apply, I'd think (and the smaller Rocotos don't take up all that much footage).

Oh, I do. I keep a few in containers, and if something excites me I keep it all season. One thing that happens in the garden starting in early July (usually) is the Leaf Footed bugs invade and sting all the fruit. So at that point I'm growing for them...but no more :shh:

Great looking plants there, Scott. Looks like a professional nursery set up.

Thanks John!

The weather looks great for the next 10 days, and the plants are happy for now ;)

After seeing 3-4 peppers with sun damage, I started putting the sun shades up. Next will be the bird netting, I already have 1" chicken wire on 2 sides of the garden. We have tons, I mean tons of birds that will destroy anything just close to ripening...

And that fence, mainly for the crazy assed winds we get here

Hey Scott! Ok I'm caught up on a portion of 2018 and fully on this years! Good God man, you are killing it. Absolutely spectacular grow you have going  I don't even know where to start! Well first off the 2018 growdown.. I spent a good chunk of time lurking on there before I came back and that was some amazing work there by you and many others, 100 gallon? lol.. Man those have gotten intense since I was last around. I love your outdoor setup, it's insane how far along it is already. The garlic, maters, peppers... everything looks good. I'm pretty jealous of your climate but it sounds like you have your fair share of issues, if your building fences to protect your plants from wind that has got to be some intense wind you deal with pretty regularly! Black widows and rattlers too? Ha! No thanks lol.

Totally random but one of my my families favorite tv shows we all watch together is Lone Star Law ( Texas fish and game show on animal planet) Texas is one beautiful state. It reminds me of a way hotter and larger version of WA in the way that you guys have a bit of everything from ocean, lakes, rivers, hills, lush forest, and desolate desert for miles all in the same state. Pretty cool I must say. Maybe I missed it but what area of Texas do you live in? Is there a point when pod production stops all together during the dog days of summer from the intense heat?

For the record, your indoor starts are some of the best I've ever seen. Dead serious. Pretty incredible. I gotta ask and again maybe I missed both of these but what kind lighting are you running in there... HOT5s? Also, what kinda soil/mix are you using if you don't mind me asking? There's gotta be some sort of secret something your using I'm convinced! lol.

Again, well done sir, well done!     Very excited to watch your season, best of luck with everything!

Actually I posted my potting soil mix in your glog earlier today...

We're in Devine, Texas, just 35 miles South West of San Antonio. Kinda semi desert here. The garden soil has been a work in progress for many years, started off with just sand, and the PH is way, way too high. 8.2 to 8.4. I've been working on that as I constantly get nutrient lock out issues, that and nutrient leaching. I've added a bhut load of crushed homemade char to the soil, as well as about 100++ yards of compost and re-ground wood chips. I no longer till, I made a broadfork and really like the results. We finally have worms in the garden now. Kinda like build it and they will come. And yes, by June only the Annuum's and the Baccatum's still produce...well some. The Chinsense say nope. If I choose to keep things going until first frost, which is around Christmas, I get a second, even better crop. To combat the PH I try to use rain water which we now collect in a 1,000 gallon tank. I haven't run out since I set it up about a year ago. I also added elemental sulfur to the garden soil, and need a soil test after this season to see where we are.

For lighting, don't laugh... I use T8's with 6,500K bulbs and a T5 with 6,500 bulbs. Kinda old school, but as long as they work, that's what I'll use. We barely notice any higher electric bills.

Now if I could get those great looking starts to perform in the dirt....

I did something 4-5 years ago that really set the garden back. I bought some heavy soil, 16 yards, and tilled it in. That stuff was great for the water retention, but dead nutrient wise and, I feel it was heavily dosed with lime. I've been working out of that hole I created ever since...almost where I was "back then"

Thanks for stopping by!

Hey Scott! Pretty far south there, anything different in your neck of the woods with all the border BS going on? Were charging $4.00 each for small avocados at my work these days and barely making any money. Pretty nuts! Sorry man I should have worded that better on the soil mix, I saw that thanks for the mix, what I should have asked is what kind of potting soil you use, my bad! Alot of work went into that bed but I tell you what its paying off judging by how she looks. Giving me motivation to maybe start working on a plot this year. That's crazy you would think Chinese would love the hot heat, huh learned something new! How long until the heat waves over june-? Very cool idea with the catchment system, we've always wanted one.

Hey man, T8s and T5s are money I don't care who you are. They work great, clearly. I had 8 T5 4X4tubes I sold when we moved looking back wish I never did   :banghead:  anyway, nice work once again, thanks for the reply!

Hey Brandon,

As far as the border goes, I really don't see much change. I've read that San Antonio has some refugees, that and the school district I work for had to purchase more IPAD's for ESL (English second language). They have a translation app.

The hot weather that halts production is from mid June to early mid September. I start seeing production around the 15th again.

Potting soil, it depends. And, it really doesn't matter unless it's complete junk, as I doctor it..December 2017 we saw Pro Mix for $5.00 a 2cf bag so I bought all we could haul in the wife's car, which was 5. If I had the truck I would have bought them out ;) This last fall I found Miracle Grow 1 cf bags for 50 cents each, the bags were damaged from UV. I bought 50 bags, let them dry out in the Tejas sun in kiddie pools which are our dog watering bowls when we go out of town...to kill the gnat larvae. That soil is actually really good stuff.

One other good score was Alaska fish ferts, gallon size on clearance at Wally World. I got 4 for $18 :shh:  Funny thing is I've just finished using the first gallon I paid like $21 for 2 years ago..

Avocados down here cost 68 cents each for the smaller Hass avocados. 'Yall have them in greenhouses? Because down here the local grower has his in hoop houses...

Very nice! That yellow flower looks like the flowers on my gf's Purple Mystic (Dahlia). That mystery plant looks like a baccatum. Maybe sugar rush (color) or something similar.

The wild flowers here are going nuts, I haven't mowed the driveway field because so many are up and blooming. That's an Aji Cito, my concern is the yellow on the leaves. It's just hanging out and not really doing anything, all the rest look good..
