Orange Habanero?

Do orange hab's usually start out this pale? The reds I've grown in the garden before definitely started out a much darker green, but I've never grown the orange ones before.

Nope, that's unusual. In my experience, that's more what a white, brown, chocolate or peach coloured pepper looks like at first.

Also, I'm not totally certain but that calyx (stem to pepper attachment point) is suggesting baccatum to me, not chinense type.

The odd thing is the seeds are from Ferry-Morse, which is a pretty big seed supplier. Of course the package does not specify isolated or open pollinated though.

Looks like a pale orange pepper to me, like a burning bush habanero. They start out light green then turn a much dark green 17-20 days before ripening.

There's several different genes that determine which ripening path the pods will take and ultimately what their final colour will be.

I did have one turn orange so I picked it to try it out. Not much hotter than my Thai peppers, but has a nice flavor not too sweet and not too floral, just nicely balanced. The biggest one on the plants so far isn't much bigger than a quarter.
