Dinsdale - Season 1 : "First Contact"

Hi everybody,

I've started my first "real" hot pepper grow, so I figured I would document it here. It will be a way for me to keep track of what happens along the way, but please feel free to chip in at any time with advice or ideas.

After reading your input in my "Too many strains, how to choose?" thread, I've decided to grow 16 plants in 1 or 2 liter pots in my 3x3 grow tent.

Here's my seedlist. I've already chosen 8 varieties.

Four are in the seedling stage in solo cups:
  • Jay's Peach Ghost Scorpion
  • Trinidad Douglah
  • Bahamian Goat
  • Naga Viper
Four are currently germinating in Root Riot cubes:
  • Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Red
  • Bhut Jolokia
  • Habanero Brown
  • Georgia Black

Now I still have to pick eight varieties out of these forty:
  • 7pot SR Strain
  • 7pot Bubblegum Chocolate
  • 7pot White
  • 7pot Congo Chocolate
  • 7pot Infinity
  • Scotch Bonnet MOA
  • Scotch Bonnet Brown
  • Habanero Guadalupe
  • Habanero Gambia
  • Habanero Cristina
  • Habanero Ivory
  • Habanero Peach
  • Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
  • Chocolate Reaper
  • Naga Morich
  • King Naga
  • White Naga
  • Trinidad Scorpion Butch T
  • Primo X Butch T
  • Guadalupe Black
  • Ecuadorian Brown
  • Peruvian Long Brown
  • Puerto Rican Yellow
  • Brazilian Starfish
  • Fatalii White
  • Snow White
  • Royal Gold
  • Devil´s Tongue Red
  • Big Bang Red
  • Aji Panca Lima
  • Lima Blanca
  • Yaki Blue Fawn
  • Pimenta da Neyde
  • Bonda Ma Jacque
  • Orange Lantern
  • CGN 21566
  • CGN 23209
  • CGN 23258
  • PI 159236
  • Brown Rocoto

What are your favorite varieties in this list? What would you choose?

Thanks for your attention!

Varieties on your list of 40 that I have tried and like:

7 Pot White: Thick walled and crunchy with a clean white chinense taste. Heat seemed to be upper habanero range or a little more.

Scotch Bonnet MoA: Very nice fruity flavor and habanero level burn.

Chocolate Bhut: At least as hot as a red bhut, but with a somewhat more complex flavor. Can be slow to germinate though.

Brazilian Starfish: Sweet and tasty, with a mild burn. Productive plant. One of my favorite baccatum varieties.

CGN21566: Fruity taste, habanero class heat. The burn seemed a bit smoother than with a lot of habaneros.

So those would be my picks of the litter, although to be fair there are a bunch of varieties on your list that I still haven't tried yet. So take my opinion for whatever it is worth I guess.

I am interested in the Brown Rocoto though. I had a plant last year, but couldn't get it to set pods in my climate. I plan to try again this year.

Anyway, good luck with your first grow!

Im in a very similar boat, I run a 4x2x5 foot grow tent and plan on growing herbs, peppers and strawberries. I sowed 50 varieties around 300-400 seeds. I plan on doing alot of culling as i replant. At the end of the summer Im looking at keeping about 8-12 varieties for over wintering.

good luck, ill definitely be  following this glog

Thanks a lot for your detailed answer!
I'll definitely add the Scotch Bonnet and the Brazilian Starfish (and maybe the CGN21566 and the Brown Rocoto) to my roster for this first season.
I think I'll also add a white strain and a purple strain.

I'm a fan of the yellow and white pods.

Good luck this season!

Thank you! I don't know how they taste yet, but white pods are freaking beautiful!

Thanks!
So you're gonna start in the tent and then replant them outside later, right? Because 50 varieties in a 4x2 tent seems like a lot! :)
For the record, I'll grow my plants in the tent for start to finish.

Here are the 40 contenders!

Did you like 'em?

Yes, very much so and this year i managed to get the Bonda ma jacques to germinate atleast one seedling, had that one growing many years ago and it produced huge load of sweet tangy citrusy tasting very hot pods and wanted to grow it again, but never managed to germinate the seeds again until this year or it could have been me, that didnt give them time to germinate and tossed the seeds away too soon. :onfire:

Naga morich has been my one of chilis to grow in every season as it is easy to grow, the heat and fruity taste of the pod is among there with the best tasting chilis i have eaten. You can cook with them, smoke them and make some powder or some tasty chili sauces..Works great everywhere.

Of the 40 in your list I've grown:
  • 7pot White
  • Scotch Bonnet MOA
  • Habanero Gambia (I grew the orange variety)
  • Habanero Peach
  • White Naga
  • Fatalii White
  • CGN 21566
Liked them all and 7Pot White might be the favourite but with Habanero Gambia a close second.

The grow tent, is it 3x3 meters or foot?
It might get crowded with 16 plants in that tent, but perhaps you've already considered that?

Best of luck on the grow!

Boy, I wish you luck this season, but I don't see anything on your list that I've had the pleasure yet--lifelong grower, second season as pepper-obsessed. I love the baccatums and a few select chinense, but I discovered the Rocotos during my first grow last year, nuff sed! They seem to go with everything!

They both look very interesting, but I already have a Naga relative currently growing, so I guess I'm gonna try the Bonda Ma Jacques first!

Thanks for the input! It's the second vote in favor of 7Pot White in this thread. And I want to grow a white variety. So it might be this one...

Sadly, the tent is 3x3ft. Man, I wish I had a 3x3m tent! :)
I know it's probably gonna be crowded. But I figure I might get away with it by using 1 litre pots. It should keep the plants in check a little bit.
My goal is to sample as much varieties as possible, even if it's just a few pods per plant.

Thank you!
If I'm not mistaken, there are two baccatums in my list, Brazilian Starfish and Rocoto Brown, and I wanted to grow one of them. I was leaning towards the Brazilian Starfish, but you know what, I think I might grow both. :)

Yes, the Starfish are wonderful, but I believe your Brown Rocoto is a Pubescen, which is the black seeded pods. They have a thick, moist flesh and a really nice heat. The Brazilian Starfish is light on the heat but has a good flavor.

My problem with both Baccatums and Pubescens is ripening. They take their time, at least they did for me. I have an insanely short season and have decided my grow this year will have to be predominantly in containers so I can bring the plants in to ripen pods....YMMV.....

Yes, my bad, it's a pubescens of course.

Good to know, about the ripening times, thanks!

Been growing those Aji Puerto Rican yellow habanero for a few years now.  Love them.

Thank you very much, duly noted!

Here's a few pictures.

First, here's my setup.
Currently, there's one Lemon Chili, two Cayenne, two Corno Di Bue, one Patio Cherry tomato plant and one San Marzano tomato plant.

And here are the seedlings: JPGS, Naga Viper, Trinidad Douglah and Bahamian Goat.
I accidentally decapitated the Bahamian Goat seedling when I tried to remove the stuck seed. The cotelydon leaves were torn off but I think the main growth tip is still present in there, so I hope that seedling will survive. Fingers crossed. I planted another seed just in case this one ends up dying.

Trinindad Scorpion Moruga Red, Habanero Brown and Georgia Black are sprouting.
Bhut Jolokia didn't germinate yet but I hear it's a slow variety.
