lighting Cree COB 3590 lights

I've read a lot of people on here using LED lights but no mention of COB lights. I put one of these together last year and it was fantastic. I was over wintering about 8 plants on it and they continued to produce under it, until aphids wrecked the plants. If I recall the specs right it was a 2700k light, 36v, they can produce about 16,000 lumens but I had mine set for about 12,000. Cheap to run too. Anyone else tried these? I think I spent $75ish putting it together.

Can you post a link or pic of it?

Ah I see. Did you put it together or buy the unit together.

I've been interested in CREE COB but I wasn't convinced to buy.

It sounds like it is working very well for you.

I put it together, all the pre built ones are 3-4x more expensive than building it. I won't say it's the prettiest thing in the world though haha
I'll have to look into doing something like that. I'm not well versed putting components together.

Dont need to be pretty to work great and for growing they will surely work. When you finally turn the thing on, jump to cover as they will just explode from all the new growing.

Well COB leds are pretty much the best in town for growing but are very expensive and then there is those regular much cheaper growing leds.

Nice build! What made you decide to go with 4000k color temp? The information I found when researching, granted all the info I could find wasn't aimed toward peppers, suggested going 2700k or 3500k.

good for vegging all around, I do plan on replacing them with 3500K. I got my hands on some of those Folux Boards in one of the threads. 80-90 CRI with choice of 3000K or 3500K or 4000K.

Aphids must die....
Aphids are the worst. When I decided to give up on over wintering plants they were thick as snow on the plants, and I burned them up.

I took some pictures of the light, pretty easy build. Cob in a holder mounted on a heat sink with thermal paste and screws. 12v fan on the heat sink. Uses a 36v LED driver to power it. I used a DC-DC buck converter to step the driver down to 12v for the fan. Used another DC-DC converter to lock the voltage in at 36v, and either a 1amp fuse or 1.2amp to prevent it from getting too hot and pulling too much power. Used aluminum flashing for the housing with 1/4" holes drilled in it for ventilation. Not pretty but works really well.

Pics of the light:

I was thinking of trying 180w cob led growing light next to the 100w led growing light, because it is in sale... It is much more powerful than my regular 100w led growing light and it is time to move on to a much newer led technology. :woohoo:
