Carolina Reaper Has the Record Again?

Best Answer BlackFatalii, 07 April 2018 - 03:18 PM

Also interesting to note is the new new new new new origin story, including the Naga Viper. A chilli that has absolutely nothing in common with the Reaper, flavourwise.

Interestingly, all of the origin claims have been removed from the Guinness site just 4 days later. There is now a new date for the record: 11 August 2017, and a slightly higher number for it, 1.64 million SHU. I have to wonder why they would bother resubmitting the Reaper last year, when Pepper X was supposedly going to blow the old record away. Perhaps they weren't too confident about that after all.

Wasnt the 7 pot primo itself a cross from a naga and a 7 pot. Lol, the parientage is getting confusing as hell.

Why do people care so much about how the Reaper came about? Even if the truth involves being shitty to someone else for your own gain, it's still just food.

The guys who do that are usually the type of guys who think there's like six kinds of peppers: bells, cayenne, long hots, cherry, Holly-peenos, and Hobby-nyeeros.

Ed is an idiot, but he ain't quite that stupid

You are entering the buttocks with the spicy hand of Chinese pepper? And pleasure from this low pepper? I am not sure but the scorpion pepper musk when raw, is the sexual experience. This is granted, and evident in the taste, and the woman jealous.

Troy Primeaux crossed the 7Pot SR with the Naga Morich and stabilized his cross for like 8+ generations. (Ed got seeds from Troy a few generations in....🤔🤔) There's nothing confusing about the "parentage" of the 7Primo....

The problems with the Reaper are:
-he's lying about the cross
-he's lying about having not seen a pepper with a tail before he "created" the Reaper
-it ain't stable
-it ain't that hot, on average
-it seems likely that he paid Guinness off, as there are many established cultivars that are known to be hotter
-he had almost certainly simply hijacked the Primo, and he's gotten famous and wealthy as a result of the these
-he has threatened litigation against hobbyist growers for trying to trade Reaper plants/seeds on social media
-he makes ppl sweat they won't sell any of the pods when they buy seeds from his site
-his videos and interviews are insulting to the intelligence of the viewers.
-the whole Pepper X fraud was an embarrassment to the industry, and it allowed him to take advantage of many chumps.
-it's impossible to discuss chiles with a casual spice enthusiast without them prattling on about Reaper madness, which kills the whole vibe.

Whether or not pepper X is BS, The Last Dab tastes really good.

As for people obsessing over the Reaper, at least it gets new people into the scene. Those who love peppers will stick around. Those who just want to feel like a badass for eating something hot won't.

At least. Only one of them is true, at most. It's possible that we haven't even heard the true story... But NONE of Ed's stories seem plausible.

Especially the latest. He just put together two famous hot peppers. The ghost pepper and a habanero.

He obviously crossed them from something so who cares. Even if it was the primo doesn't mean he did anything wrong by crossing "something" with the primo. People trademark things all the time that they didn't create. It just means that they were smart enough to do it. He can "lie" all he wants to about the origin of the variety but again, doesn't mean he's done anything wrong. He just doesn't want people knowing. It creates more hype. Hence, this thread

I do realize that but we have the right to hate on him and question his every moves. Just like he has the right to lie to the public. =)

If you think somebody can lie about their product without having done anything wrong, I can only conclude that you and I have different definitions of right and wrong....

I got some pods from Bhuter here on THP; they're a cross he calls the 7Pot Cinder, and I think they are at like F3? He sent me the pods so I could taste them, save seeds, and grow them out this year. I am truly appreciative of that...

But, I think we can all agree that it'd be a scumbag move if I gave them a new name, promoted the F out of them, and told everyone I got the variety by crossing a Jalapeño with a Cayenne.... Even if I did take the thing in a new direction and I ended up developing a new strain, I would not hide the original and lie about it... I'd give credit where credit is due, and shout out Andy Bhuter and his Cinder...

I think that there's a distinction between right & wrong versus legal and illegal.... Maybe Ed hasn't broken any laws, but he's acted like a jackass...

Just the way he's threatened hobbyist growers who enjoy his peppers is enough where I wouldn't want to spend a penny in anything associated with his name or his company. What a tool...

The problem is not that he crossed something with a Primo, it's that he just grew out the Primo. He hasn't crossed anything. It'd be fine if he actually crossed a Primo with something else and created his own pepper. But, I don't think that's what happened.

I doubt this one. Ed just got his record in during controversy over the methods used to verify chilli records. He was essentially the last person in under lax rules that allowed single peppers to claim the top spot rather than variety averages and had resulted in at least one fortnight-long reign.

Or he may have been slightly after the changes but, either way, they have tightened their regulations no end AND made them invisible to the general public but that's largely due to backlash surrounding the 7-Pot Infinity to Naga Viper handover. I wholeheartedly believe that it was just luck on Ed's part, claiming his record when he did and, if he did manipulate the situation at all, manipulating the media into putting preassure on the record books would have been more effective than bribing them directly.

How early did he get the seeds? I've seen people say that two people can start with the same pepper and get different things as they stabilize because the traits they were looking for were different.

I'd agree with you, except Guinness has published a new date (August 2017) and a new SHU...

There's little doubt in my mind that Guinness is a pay-to-play operation. Otherwise, there are landrace peppers that meet the new rules and beat the Reaper, but Guinness doesn't include them because no one wants to put up the money...

Legal and illegal are not the same as ethical and unethical. Just because you can legally do something without penalty doesn't mean you should.

Anyway, here's a pretty neat article I found about Mr. Primeaux. Looks like he's got some pretty cool stuff in the works.

I'm not trying to say that what he did or didn't do is ok because it's not illegal but I know the guys made his life work from breeding and growing peppers so I would hate to condemn the guy based on internet gossip. I would just prefer to give him and his company the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise.
