Bhuter's 2018 Glog

Hello everybody! I'm late again to the adventures of pepper growing. Seeds didn't hit the towel until March 6, so I have some still below, some hooks, and some little plants. Not too much to look at right now but how about a growlist.

Lots of crosses, purples, & BBG. I also air layered a clone from the Caramel Cinder F2 last year (with the help of pepper-guru...thanks, Rich) and it's been in stasis until recently. Just starting new growth and already set a pod.

And here's the whole lot. I don't have much room...just what I can fit under a card table.

Thanks for stopping by!

But how did you like the flavor? Would you cook with them?

The heat hit so quickly, I did not really get much of a chance to taste it, but the one I tried had a bitter, floral flavor.

I would not use them for cooking or sauce.

Hows the air layer project coming along?

It's still wrapped up. I was thinking about checking it today since tomorrow's highs are in the 60's...then it's slightly warmer...then cold. It's too early for cold. Lol. But if I get some more soil, I'll probably get to planting it...if all went well.

Well, that didn't work out exactly as I had hoped. I took apart the air layering after 20 days and it looked as though I had just put it on. A little darker maybe, from dampness. I don't know if my dirt is too compact, too wet, if I should just use moss, or if it just wasn't enough time/correct weather. No long-ish roots have grown. BUT, the "white crystally bulge" that was on the one I tried last year is there again. Soooooo, roots have begun to grow, just not in length.

So I potted it up, anyway. I'm gonna have to cut some leaves and pull the pods on here.

I'm sure it'll look like it's dying before it starts growing again.

If anybody else has tried this, please let us know! I'd like to know how to get better at doing this.

Well, I don't think my air layering is gonna take. I asked Pepper-Guru for advice and he mentioned "not scoring the stem so deeply." So I tried it again, this time with just Saran Wrap, soil, and foil. I don't know if this is too shallow, but I'm trying it! It's cold now, but we have 70's for about a week and a half. So I'll try again.

Great looking pods!

Excellent pics.
Thank you, Al! Sometimes it hard to get phones to focus, but when they do, they're not half-bad. Lol. I am amazed by your garden this season. And you got the CPR that you got cheated out of last year.

Well done Adam!
Some great pods there ;)
Thanks, Scott! I'll have to mosey on over to see how Tejas is doing. I'm so far behind.

I pulled a little harvest off of my 2 Black Naga x Peri-Peri F2 plants.

Here's the red

Here's the brown

Not a huge harvest. About 25 red and I lost count of the brown at 71. But I have about 1/3 of a quart freezer bag full of the brown. I'm planning on doing SOMETHING with them. Lol

Pepper grow looking very good, Adam! The air layering video is very
informative, an interesting concept. I have done some pepper cloning
with cuttings taken from young plants with some success, but nothing
like that.  Maybe peppers are just more difficult to air layer than figs,
some plants put down roots even if they just graze the soil, like my
Baden-Baden rhododendron. It has rooted five or six branches around
the drip line of the shrub.

But I digress, your grow is outstanding, Adam, Good work...

Can you pot up the plant and bring it inside to give it some more time?

Thank you, Paul! I think my problem with the air layering is the depth of the scoring. The videos I watched showed a certain depth...but none of them were pepper plants...mainly trees. I've been cutting deeply. So the first try this year didn't work. I'm in the process of "Take 2" on the same plant. This one is basically just the "skin" of the branch...nothing chunky.

If "Take 2" fails, then my last resort is to pull the whole plant out of the ground and overwinter it.

Those reapers!
Thanks, Ryan! If you mean the Carolina plant, I haven't started a Reaper from seed in a few years...if I have at all. Believe it or not, this is a local nursery plant. Their phenos and labeling are hit or miss, but the Reapers are always spot-on. I'm planning on saving seeds from these two pods, if you'd like some. Or anything else I may have.

Thank you, Tristan! I think if I have a lot of greens that they'll all be small. The bigger pods should finish out. According to the forecast, it'll still be above freezing...in fact in the 50's...on the 20th. So I have a few more weeks. But it's the up and down that the plants don't care for. I usually pull plants between the middle of oct to middle of nov.
