2018 Southern Hemisphere Grow Down-Under

Hi All

It's getting to that stage where we need to plan the next growdown.

I can supply the Aji Cito seeds, but will need to get them posted pretty quick so get voting

I also have no issue if we go with something else, but will need to order in good time as it takes ages to get to NZ

If you vote 'Something Else' post a suggested variety

Poll closes Friday 27th April

General Rules
  • GROWDOWN BEGINS 21st JUNE
  • Seeds to be started on or after start date
  • Germinate and grow as many as you want
  • All grow styles and techniques welcome
  • Only one plant can count towards your entry
  • Nominate your growdown plant at first weigh in
  • Weigh each harvest, and post picture of pods on scales here
  • Heaviest total weight of pods in one year from start will be the winner
  • Honour system - If you cheat the Aphid Gods will know

I know this is just a fun game, so it doesn't matter, but I'm just thinking about the difference now to learn a little.

Just thinking about how my established chillis produce through winter, but starting in winter things go quite slowly until it gets warm.

My reckoning is that it will be close regardless of location, but SH growers may have the advantage a bit since the plant itself does not require huge lighting when small.

By the time spring comes and we let mamma sunshine do her thing the tides will be turning and advantage is in our court until about May next year when frost sets in.

All depends on how well NH train, feed and tend to their plants for that last month.

This is just for fun (as long as I’m winning)and only a game (as long as I’m winning). If your progress is not as awesome as mine rest assured I will not brag (more than a couple of times).

Seriously though I wish the best for all and I genuinely think it will be close. Cito’s grow weed like and are really hardy. If any of us break 1kg then they doing great.

Bring on 21 June

The eight jalapenos plans in my greenhouse (which are 2-3 years old and 2m tall) are still producing 5 - 15 fully ripe red peppers a week even though it's been mostly wet and we're not far off the middle of winter, so hoping it does ok for this other variety :) I don't have any prime spots left, so they will get a bit less light than the others, but should do ok.

They should do just fine.

I've got Cito's in the garden that I've neglected completely and they just refuse to die off. Real hardy little buggers.

I'm thinking the start time plays into my hand perfectly. The plant won't be in heavy production mode during my hottest months when flowers refuse to set. It never really gets too cold here, but if it does I move it in the shop. I think my OW's spent around ten days in there last winter..

Haha.

Looking forward toward the head start. My week is already planned

21st plant seed
22nd top the plant
23rd transplant to 38ltr pot
24th pick flowers to promote veg growth
25th first harvest
26th second harvest
27th get plant ready for over wintering

I reckon 4kg of pods will do until October.

Still waiting for my heat mat to arrive... Maybe i'll start em in the microwave, heard it works.

Fair enough and I guess those not using heat mats and opting for the microwave method can have a one day head start.

To make it fully transparent a video upload as a starting entry is required though.
