2018 Southern Hemisphere Grow Down-Under

Hi All

It's getting to that stage where we need to plan the next growdown.

I can supply the Aji Cito seeds, but will need to get them posted pretty quick so get voting

I also have no issue if we go with something else, but will need to order in good time as it takes ages to get to NZ

If you vote 'Something Else' post a suggested variety

Poll closes Friday 27th April

General Rules
  • GROWDOWN BEGINS 21st JUNE
  • Seeds to be started on or after start date
  • Germinate and grow as many as you want
  • All grow styles and techniques welcome
  • Only one plant can count towards your entry
  • Nominate your growdown plant at first weigh in
  • Weigh each harvest, and post picture of pods on scales here
  • Heaviest total weight of pods in one year from start will be the winner
  • Honour system - If you cheat the Aphid Gods will know

I only planted 4 to start with, and wasn't confident in them so planted another 4.

This is the first 4, getting a bit leggy

And this is the second 4. 3 have sprouted, but 2 of them hadn't popped up when I checked this morning.

Took about 14 days to get to this point, but they're in a very cold shed on a heat mat. I have a 12W LED hanging about 40cm above the plants, on about 14 hours a day.

Also attached photos of what I got from the jalapenos in my greenhouse this week :) I did a lot of pruning and these are the ones that were ripe.

Some good looking seedlings there guys. Mine are doing their own weird thing and Im thinking some winter sunshine will give them a boost.

Can’t remember what leaves pointing up means, but last year I had it was when plants were too close to the light source. Dropped them down a bit and they were fine.

I wouldn’t have thought my led I’m using would do this tbh. Might just swap out 230W unit with 120W and see what happens.

Anyway here’s my update for this week.

Looking good!
Mine will get potted up this weekend. They scared me the other day after I forgot they were in full sun. I'm not using lights as it's full time summer here. They forgave me and survived...
I'm still torn on which is better until they get some true leaf sets rocking.. Indoor with light or outside full sun. I have same situation here where it's kickin out there but I also got lights indoors..

At this point with day times above 90°, hitting or close to 100° for 8 hours plus, I have them in semi shade. I'm ready to take a trip for 9 days and am quite worried. Half will be in #2 pots in the shop and the half in #2 pots in the garden, under 40% sunshade, being over-watered a bit while we're gone. May the strong survive!

Hey Guys
Radio silence from this grower so here is an update.
Starting on the 21st, my seeds took and overnight bath in a cup of chamomile tea to soften up then into seed trays filled with recycled soil from last season.
Into the chilli fridge (old fridge converted into an incubator) at a comfy 28C +/- 2C and 75% humidity +/- 5%.
10 days later the first few soldiers poked there heads out.
And final photo is from today, just starting to get some true leaves coming through.
