Exotics

No one ever got a "Dad bod" from eating a lychee! Lol

It's those beers and chips that will get you.

You may be right about that...  But until I finish my metamorphosis, there are no lychees on the menu! :D
.
It's as hard to go to Portland and say no to craft brews, as it is to live in Florida, and say no to exotic fruit.  :tear:

Baker quit carrying them last year or the year before that.

I will make sure to save some seeds this time.

Yeah, they only carry the Mexican ones now, but it's not at all the same.

I will definitely hit you up for some seed later on.  I like those things.

Yeah I know how it feels to be almost willing to kill for a piece of fruit. Needless to say that diet only lasted about a month. It's just too hard to say no to fruit and bread.

Yeah, that's how it feels.

Unfortunately, I have a an almost obsessive compulsion to stay lean and mean.  Not because I want to impress anyone - but because most of the men in my family started having heart attacks around age 38.  Carrying that weight around the midsection is the worst thing for anyone with a predisposition.  It's just a sign that your risk is on the increase.
.
OK, so most of the men in my family liked to drink, smoke, and pound soda.  I don't smoke, haven't had a proper soda in 20 years, and drinking is a casual affair, at best, for me.  But still...  Everyone seems to want to tell me that I can't escape genetics.  While that may be true, I'm stubborn, damn it.  I refuse to accept that without a fight.  Even if I have to skip the fruit, and do a few extra push-ups, pull-ups, and dips. :(

(I sure would love to try that honey)

I second that!  We always bring orange blossom honey back from Naples, every year without fail.  The best we can get here in PA is clover honey and there's simply no comparison.

No affiliation, but we love "Naples Finest."  Not widely distributed to stores, it's pretty local to the Naples area and you'll find it in most of the larger farmers' markets there.  A few friends like their Saw Palmetto honey, also.

One "exotic" I will NOT be growing again are cukemelons, or Mexican Sour Gherkins.  They are cute as hell, but a royal PIA to harvest.  An odd flavor and texture, too.  Just didn't do it for me.  One plus is they never picked up any of the diseases or fungal conditions, or the bug attacks the rest of the cucurbits got hit with.

Since when is fruit not heart healthy? I know eating too many bananas would be a bad call but you can go overboard with anything..

Since they contain sugars.  You know... "fructose".  What happens to unused sugar stores?
.
I'm not suggesting that fruits are unhealthy.  I'm just saying that until I shed my surplus (which isn't even bad by most people's standards) I won't be having any.  I discovered that I was growing "love handles" for the first time in my life.  And when you have a family history of heart disease and diabetes, as a man, your first warning sign is excess weight around the midsection.
.
I take that stuff pretty seriously.

I always thought honey was just honey. Finding out there are several types is awesome and overwhelming too.

It is!  When my husband and I first got our coach, He soon knew he was going to stop every time I saw a sign in someone's yard about honey for sale.  However, I quickly learned to buy only the smallest container, as the cupboards in a coach aren't the biggest and they were filling up fast!   There's a culinary road map in the pantry.  :drooling:

I'm a purist when it comes to using it...it doesn't get used in cooking or baking, I use it as a condiment, like on plain yogurt, a buttermilk biscuit or toast.  I love the nuances of the different varieties.  Except clover honey which, for some odd reason, I find to be astringent.

I figured the naturally occurring sugars in fruit was different from the stuff in chocolate and candy.

When someone has a heart attack at an early age, you always hear people say that they probably ate too much red meat, junk food and all of that. What are you expected to eat without worry? Just vegetables?

Sugar is sugar.  Doesn't matter where it comes from.  Although, if you're going to eat sugar, it's better to get it from a food that has some actual nutritional value, and limit the intake.
.
Meat and fat isn't the enemy.  There is a growing body of medical evidence that suggests that sugars and carbohydrates are more of a major health risk than even fats and sodium. (hence the rise of low carb diets - which really work, by the way - my weight and numbers don't lie)  However, I don't want to hijack this thread.  LOL

I can handle being yanked back and forth on whether or not eggs are good for you, but fruit? Yeesh...

I'm beginning to think it's just a matter of balance between each.

Back on topic, I've saved half the seeds from the Summer Kiss melon and eaten a good bit of it. I like it more than the white fleshed dragon fruit, though it doesn't look nearly as cool.

The way sugar works in the body, metabolically speaking is EXACTLY the same for white sugar, brown sugar, fruit sugar, etc.  There are different glycemic values, but sugar is sugar is sugar.  Don't believe me?  Ask a type 1 diabetic...
.
You may have a problem with something that results from the way sugar is refined, but that's a whole other issue.

Not sure if you would consider this an exotic but I think it's an interesting variety. I'm growing these tigger melons this year. Not my photo but this is what it looks like.

That looks cool!

I got a Galia melon and an Orange Fleshed Honeydew. I don't know if they count as exotic, but they're new to me.
