Too soon?

Youve got a plant thats no more than 7" in height. Its flowering, and wanting to pump out pods. What do you do? Does flowering inhibit growth at this stage?

Perhaps it is time to put it in a bigger container if it likes to start producing pods being that small. It might slow down the growing a bit but the plant knows best when it is ready to start producing pods, so keep giving it fertilizer so it can grow big and strong while producing more pods.

Lets say its one of those plants you get from the nursery. The ones with buds, and one droopy pod dangling. You place it in a 5 gallon container. In 2 weeks time, its not put on any growth. Just wants to continue flowering.I should add that this is a friend's situation, not my own, and Im trying to give them some good advice.

Rootbound before transferring? Did your friend break up the roots well?

I'm a fat, hungry, greedy bastard. If a plant has pods hanging, I'm happy. I realize that one could theoretically discourage blooming so encourage more vegetative growth, which means potentially far more pods down the line...

But my greed is more of a short-term, instant gratification thing. I'm not looking to the future... I want my pods asafp.

I did get some little scrawny plants from the nursery with a lot of buds and flowers, even a few little pods. In practice, I didn't punch any of our anything, but I put the plants into the beds with the rest, knowing full well that the plant might very well slow down on the flowers and concentrate on growth. And I'm cool with that, either way.

Like ChiliDude said above, the plant knows better than I do. I firmly believe that.

I would definitely cut off all blooms and fruit from a plant I'm transplanting until it starts growing well again.  You want it to put as much energy into rooting as possible.  If a plant is established and is growing, I'll usually leave the blooms irregardless of the size if it's in an appropriate sized container.

this would be a good time to repot and treat it with two watering of kelp extract. the kelp will push root growth which will begin to fill out the new container and subsequently produce larger top growth as a result.
